DON’T OVERWATER YOUR SUCCULENTS — It’s the #1 killer! 🌵
We love to love our succulents too much. More water does NOT mean more love. In fact, overwatering is far more dangerous than underwatering.
What happens when you overwater:
1. Root Rot: Roots sit in wet soil, can’t breathe, and start to rot. By the time you see it on top, it’s often too late underneath.
2. Mushy, Yellow Leaves: Leaves turn translucent, yellow, and fall off with the slightest touch. That’s not dry — that’s drowning.
3. Black Stem Rot: The stem turns soft and black at the base. This is the emergency signal.
4. Mold, Mildew & Gnats: Constantly damp soil is an invitation for fungus and fungus gnats.
How to avoid it — The Sam Method:
• Soak & Dry: Only water when the soil is 100% dry. Stick your finger 1-2 inches in. Dry? Then soak it thoroughly until water runs out the drain hole. Then leave it alone.
• Drainage is non-negotiable: No drainage hole = trouble. That beautiful bowl needs a hole, or you need to be extra careful.
• Use the right soil: Regular potting soil holds too much water. Use a cactus/succulent mix — gritty and fast-draining.
• Terracotta is your friend: It breathes and helps soil dry faster.
• Watch the season: In this heat, they may need water every 10-14 days. In winter, maybe once a month.
Already overwatered? Stop watering immediately, gently unpot it, cut off any black/mushy roots, let it air dry for 2-3 days, then repot in dry succulent soil.
Have a succulent you’re worried about? Bring it by or DM me a photo — happy to diagnose it.
Happiness is Home, and a happy succulent is a dry succulent.
