Before John Stewart became one of DC’s greatest heroes, his look was inspired by a Hollywood legend.

Sidney Poitier’s presence helped shape the creation of John Stewart, one of the first major Black superheroes in DC Comics. When artist Neal Adams designed the character in 1971, he drew from Poitier’s intelligence, confidence, and commanding presence.

That choice helped create a hero who felt powerful, respected, and real.

John Stewart would go on to become one of the most iconic Green Lanterns in comic book history, introducing generations of fans to a hero whose legacy reached far beyond the pages of comics.

Sidney Poitier changed how the world saw Black excellence on screen — and his influence reached even into the universe of superheroes.
