Thank you, Governor Gavin Newsom for your commitment to strengthen and reform California’s behavioral health system, especially for those in crisis. By signing AB 173 into law, you’ve helped advance the work needed to build a more coordinated, accountable and effective 988 system.

NAMI is grateful for your dedication to building a behavioral health crisis-response system that connects every Californian with the appropriate care when and where they need it most.

💚 October is National Depression Education and Awareness Month.

Depression is more than having a bad day or feeling sad. It can affect mood, energy, sleep, concentration, relationships, and everyday activities — and it may look different from person to person.

Learning to recognize the signs can help us better support ourselves and the people around us.

If symptoms are persistent or begin interfering with daily life, reaching out to a mental health or health care professional can be an important step toward getting support.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of su***de, call or text 988.

A simple check-in can make a meaningful difference 💚

If someone you care about seems overwhelmed, withdrawn, or unlike themselves, you don’t need to have the perfect words. Start with what you’ve noticed, listen without judgment, and remind them that they don’t have to go through it alone.

If you’re concerned that someone may be thinking about su***de, it’s okay to ask directly and help them connect with support.

Call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
