A successful new deployment at Allegheny County Jail, one of Pennsylvania's high volume intake facilities, and a partnership we're proud of.

Working with Holly Martin, the facility's Deputy Warden, has meant building something that strengthens safety and welfare for individuals in custody while supporting the staff who safeguard it every shift.

Before you evaluate any monitoring platform, ask what happens after intake screening ends.

Hospital radar wasn’t designed for corrections.

Radar-based vital-sign monitoring sounds compelling: mount a sensor in a cell and remotely monitor heart rate and respiration. But look at what the underlying technology was actually designed to do.
The Xandar Kardian XK300 is FDA cleared for adult patients in a “general care hospital environment including nursing homes.” A jail is not a hospital room.

Three things correctional leaders should know:

1️⃣ Movement matters.
The XK300 is described as measuring resting heart rate and respiratory rate. Its vital-sign measurement depends on sufficient body stability.
People in jail don’t remain still in a predictable position. They roll over, sit up, pace, detox, move around their cells and leave them.

2️⃣ Accuracy declines at lower vital signs.
Peer-reviewed research on the XK300 found increased heart-rate measurement error below 70 bpm and increased respiratory-rate error below 18 breaths/min.
That matters when monitoring people experiencing medical deterioration, intoxication, detoxification or overdose.

3️⃣ Its FDA-cleared indication is a clinical environment—not corrections.
