Our team has been working diligently to support applicants through every step of the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF), especially in our requests for additional documentation.

As the seasons transition from summer to fall, Native Community Capital continues to focus on wrapping up the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) program.

With a little over a week remaining in the NHAF program, our team remains committed to working diligently to deploy the remaining program funds to eligible applicants — “eligible” being a critical part of this statement.

At its core, the NHAF program was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helped many of our relatives recover from dire circumstances. We know additional support is needed outside of what NHAF was able to provide. We suggest reaching out to your elected officials and request that more programs like these exist to help out our people.

While we wish that we could support all of our Navajo relatives through this program, we must also uphold our duty to guard against fraud, waste, and abuse of these federal funds while also maintaining high ethical standards. All of our clients are required to undergo the same application process and meet all eligibility requirements.

Please continue to check back in for updates on the NHAF program. Our final report will outline the full impact of this program, which we anticipate sharing in the weeks following the conclusion of the program on September 30, 2026.

Throughout this past summer, states such as Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah all experienced monsoon and other heavy rainfall that resulted in flash floods. According to the National Weather Service, all of these states are leaning towards above-average rainfall for the upcoming fall season as well. Water damage due to leaky roofs and other exterior repairs severely affects the integrity of homes.

As of July 31, 2026, the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) has provided 92 roofing repairs, 91 window & door repairs, and 41 structural repairs, ensuring that our relatives are protected from severe weather events.

The Home Repair Assistance (HRA) program provided up to $200,000 per household for Home Repair Assistance to prevent homeowner displacement, such as home repairs to maintain the habitability of a home, including repairing gutters. This program was available in all 50 states.

The Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) is proud of the work we're doing to support families through programs such as Mortgage Principal Reduction Assistance.

We acknowledge that the process has not been smooth for all applicants due to the program's eligibility and documentation requirements.

Key components of NHAF — such as the need to show proper documentation of a COVID-19 related hardship after the purchase of the home — are required to comply with the terms of the NHAF program as a whole.

While we wish we could serve all Navajo homeowners through NHAF, we must adhere to the terms set forth for this federal program.

Home repairs are expensive, and we often have more immediate needs. There are school clothes to buy, that unexpected car repair is a must, and sometimes a relative just needs a little help with bills. And yet, homes shelter our people — and those repairs still need to get done too.

As of July 31, 2026, the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) has provided 213 interior repairs, 66 electrical repairs, and 19 health & safety related repairs, ensuring that children and parents alike have a comfortable home to return to at the end of a long day.

The Home Repair Assistance (HRA) program provided up to $200,000 per household for Home Repair Assistance to prevent homeowner displacement, such as home repairs to maintain the habitability of a home, including repairing countertops, interior drywall, and bathrooms. This program was available in all 50 states.

Summer 2026 delivered intense heat across the nation. Phoenix alone recorded 56 days that reached or exceeded 110°F, breaking the previous annual record.

As of July 31, 2026, the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) has provided 118 HVAC repairs, 66 electrical repairs, and 92 roofing repairs, ensuring that our relatives have a way to keep cool during the hottest months on record.

The Home Repair Assistance (HRA) program provided up to $200,000 per household for Home Repair Assistance to prevent homeowner displacement, such as home repairs to maintain the habitability of a home, including repairing HVAC systems. This program was available in all 50 states.

🎉 We just had our biggest month yet!

In the month of August alone, we deployed over $5.1 Million through the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF), up from $3M+ in July and $2.8M+ in June.

This brings our total deployed funds for the NHAF program to $30M+.

As we approach the end of the NHAF program, scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2026, our team is working diligently to distribute remaining funds to current eligible applicants. We will not be accepting any more applications for the duration of the NHAF program.

In Q2 of this year, our team continued our diligent efforts to deploy funding through the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund.

Compared to Q1, we saw a 23%+ increase in deployed funds and a 17%+ increase in the number of clients served.

As of June 30, 2026, this brings our total number of homeowners supported through the NHAF program to 422, with $25.8M+ in deployed funding since the program began in 2021.

With the NHAF program scheduled to end on September 30, 2026, we have increased our efforts to spend down the remaining program funds. Our hard work is paying off, and we continue to exceed monthly grant awards every month. Stay tuned for updates in the days ahead

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE: THE 25TH NNC DIRECTIVE WILL NOT RESULT IN RE-OPENING THE APPLICATION PORTAL. ONLY CURRENT ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS WILL BE SERVED AS TIME AND FUNDS ALLOW.

On August 24, 2026, the 25th Navajo Nation Council (25th NNC) issued a directive requiring Navajo Division of Children & Family Services (NDCFS) to amend its Subrecipient Agreement (SRA) with Native Community Capital regarding the U.S. Treasury Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF). The amended SRA resulted in Term Sheet Modification 5 that “Remove[s] all additional requirements imposed by the Navajo Nation or Native Community Capital that is more restrictive than the federal requirements,” for the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund’s (NHAF) Mortgage Principal Reduction Assistance and Mortgage Payment Assistance programs.

Therefore, effective as of the date the directive was issued (8/24/26), we will comply with the directive and will review all applications that have not yet been decided, using the least restrictive evaluation criteria permitted by the U.S. Treasury. Applicants will still need to provide proof that a COVID-19 related hardship occurred after the purchase of their home.

Although we are prioritizing expeditious review to expend funds by the deadline, we will uphold our duty to guard against fraud, waste, and abuse of these federal funds while continuing to maintain high ethical standards. We will also continue to strictly comply with U.S. Treasury regulations and restrictions in expending the funds, as has been the case since the launch of the NHAF program.

Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund to Reduce Program Eligibility Requirements Under Navajo Nation Council Directive

On August 24, 2026, the 25th Navajo Nation Council issued a directive to the Navajo Division of Children and Family Services (NDCFS) regarding their oversight of the U.S. Treasury Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF). To fulfill the directive, NDCFS immediately amended its Subrecipient Agreement (SRA) with Native Community Capital (NCC) – a non-profit entity that manages the Navajo HAF Program on behalf of the Navajo Nation.

The amended SRA requires NCC to, “Remove all additional requirements imposed by the Navajo Nation or Native Community Capital that is more restrictive than the federal requirements,” for the Navajo HAF Program’s Mortgage Principal Reduction Assistance and Mortgage Payment Assistance.

NCC affirmed that it will comply with the directive, effective as of the date it was issued (August 24, 2026). NCC shall review all applications that have not yet been decided, using the least restrictive evaluation criteria permitted by the U.S. Treasury.

Given that approximately four weeks remain before the U.S. Treasury-imposed deadline of September 30, 2026, NCC staff will work to obligate an estimated remaining available $7 million to avoid recapture of funds by the U.S. Treasury.

Though they are prioritizing expeditious review to expend funds by the deadline, the NDCFS and NCC will uphold their duty to guard against fraud, waste, and abuse of these federal funds while maintaining high ethical standards. The NDCFS and NCC confirm they will strictly comply with U.S. Treasury regulations and restrictions in expending the funds, as has been the case. Applicants will still need to provide proof that a COVID-19 related hardship occurred after the purchase of their home.

The Homeowner Assistance Fund is a federal program, authorized through the American Rescue Plan Act, to support homeowners facing financial hardship due to COVID-19.
