Connection One

Connection One is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) established by the Ira A. The Connection One Research Center is at the forefront of developing next-generation antennas, low-power computer chips, advanced transistor models, and cutting-edge, multiple-function circuitry to enhance technologies ranging from cellular to environmental and defense applications. The NSF-funded center partners with universities and corporations to bring together the academic laboratory with state-of-the-art research initiatives and real-world market applications. In addition to Arizona State University (the lead university), the center includes the University of Arizona (UA), the University of Hawaii (UH), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and the Ohio State University (OSU). Industrial partners include Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, the Department of Energy, Raytheon, AFRL, CERDEC, and the Department of Homeland Security, among many others. The center has grown tremendously over the past four years. New labs were built this past year in the following areas: RF IC design, mixed-signal analog/digital IC testing, VLSI design and system testing, MEMS system fabrication, and electromagnetic anechoic chamber, in addition to an RF screen room testing facility. The center is involved in the design of multiple RF and analog/digital ICs. Some of the IC fabrication processes currently being used include: TSMC, IBM, Honeywell, Freescale, SPAWR, and Peregrine. Connection One is a member of the DARPA Trusted Foundry group. Connection One currently has over 15 faculty, 100 PhD students, and 500 MS students conducting research in sensors, actuators, micro fluidics, and associated microelectronics for biomedical and environmental applications; MEMS sensors and actuators; digital, VLSI design; design for variability; design for harsh environments including temperature, radiation, and aging; analog, mixed-signal design for biomedical, telecommunication, defense, automotive, and instrumentation applications; analog, RF, and mixed-signal test development, design for testability, and built-in self-test space electronics; and more.
