August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month.

Adult supervision is the number one way to prevent drowning. We typically see an increase in drowning incidents during August in Arizona as families get distracted with back to school. With this new season of life and a lot of uncertainty it can definitely be distracting. It is okay to "close" your home pool when you need to or when it's not time to swim.
An adult should be sober, know how to swim, know CPR and limit distractions when poolside. Better yet - get in and swim!

Hazard:

Recently, Tempe and Phoenix firefighters rescued a hiker who suffered a broken leg at Hole in the Rock.

What many people don't see is the training behind a rescue like this.

When someone is injured on a mountainside, there isn't a "912" to call if the rescue becomes more complicated. That's why Technical Rescue Team members spend hundreds of hours preparing before they're ever needed.

Depending on the terrain, it can take 12 to 16 firefighters to safely move both the patient and the rescue team.

Every team member completes a 200-hour certification program before joining the Technical Rescue Team. From there, training never really stops. Throughout the year, they continue building specialized skills in rope rescue, helicopter operations, confined space rescue, swift water rescue and more.

Technical Rescue Teams also respond across city boundaries as part of the Valley's automatic aid system, so firefighters from different departments regularly train together to ensure they can work seamlessly when every minute counts.

We hope you never need a Technical Rescue Team. But if you do, you can have confidence that the firefighters responding have prepared for that moment.

Rescuers were able to connect him to a line from Phoenix Firebird helicopter and safely fly the hiker off the mountain.

Crews then escorted his family down the trail.
