Today, the ASU Graduate College recognizes Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in our nation's history and an opportunity to reflect on freedom, resilience and community. It honors generations of perseverance, strength and hope.
