đĽ DEVELOPING : A TxDOT road crew vehicle appears to have caught fire this afternoon on TX-34 north of Terrell, near the same area where a hay bale was reported blocking the roadway earlier this week.
Terrell Volunteer Fire Department and Fullerâs Heavy Duty Wrecker are currently on scene.
At this time:
⢠Traffic is getting through with one lane open.
⢠Expect delays if youâre traveling through the area.
⢠We have not received information on any injuries or what caused the fire.
Weâll continue gathering information and provide updates as they become available.

A reminder of how quickly conditions can change this time of year.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a grass fire on Meadow Way after a controlled burn escaped containment and spread onto a neighboring property.
Firefighters say approximately 3 acres burned, and two structures were threatened before crews brought the fire under control.
They also shared an important reminder: despite discussion about one, there is currently no county burn ban in effect. Even so, hot, dry, and windy conditions can cause fires to spread much faster than many people expect.
If youâre planning to burn brush, consider waiting for cooler, wetter conditions.
Thank you to the firefighters and first responders who helped prevent this from becoming much worse.

đ¨ BREAKING: CareFlight responds to crash in Ables Springs
Emergency crews responded to a serious incident this afternoon near the intersection of FM 2728 and FM 429 in Ables Springs, where a CareFlight helicopter was called to the scene.
Based on what weâre seeing at the scene, it appears to involve a single vehicle, but officials have not yet confirmed the circumstances or the extent of any injuries.
The roadway was temporarily shut down while first responders, the Kaufman County Sheriffâs Office, and DPS worked the scene.
Weâll update this post as more information is confirmed.

3:35pm â ď¸Road Hazard Alert : A follower just sent us this video showing a large hay bale partially blocking the southbound lane of TX-34 between The Rock Church and CR 320.
If youâre headed that way, slow down and use extra caution until itâs cleared.

đŚđSchool is officially back in session â and so is the traffic.
This morning, we filmed first-day traffic on Colquitt Road near Herman Furlough Middle School and on Poetry Road near Terrell High School, where new traffic patterns are now in place.
Parents, students and other drivers may want to allow a little extra time this afternoon and over the next few days while everyone gets familiar with the new flow.

That near miss on TX-34 raised a bigger question:
**Are we looking at a road problem, a driver problemâor both?**
We pulled the available TxDOT crash records included in our TX-34 corridor search from January 2021 through July 29, 2026.
The export reports **more than 500 crashes**, including **8 fatal crashes and 9 deaths**.
Among the contributing factors recorded in those crash reports:
⢠**Failure to yield:** 174 crashes
⢠**Driver inattention or distraction:** 122
⢠**Failed to control speed, unsafe speed or speeding:** 116
⢠**Lane, passing or wrong-way factors:** 45
⢠**Following too closely:** 19
⢠**Drinking or intoxication:** 16
Those categories can overlap because a single crash may have more than one contributing factor.
Another important detail: approximately **80% of the crashes occurred on dry pavement**, and nearly **72% occurred during clear weather**.
This data does **not** prove that every crash was caused by reckless driving. It also does not tell us whether road design, traffic volume, visibility, turning conflicts or other conditions contributed.
But it does show that driver behavior repeatedly appears in the crash reports.
Now we need the knowledge of the people who travel TX-34 every day:
**What exact stretch or intersection concerns you mostâand what do you regularly see happening there?**
Speeding? Unsafe passing? Difficult turns? Poor visibility? Drivers pulling out into traffic?
Please include the location, direction of travel and approximate time of day. Weâll use the responses to identify problem areas and begin building a community-sourced **TX-34 safety map**.
