3οΈβ£6οΈβ£0οΈβ£0οΈβ£ π Meet Brandy, Our #1 Kid Horse π
When parents ask us which horse we trust most with the kids, Brandy is the one who stands out.
Sheβs a 16-year-old Quarter Horse mare, around 14.2β14.3 hands, with the quiet, patient nature families look for. Brandy is kid safe, beginner safe, and family safe, easy to handle, and more whoa than go.
What we love most about her isn't just how she rides. It's how she behaves during the everyday things too. Brushing, saddling, handling, and spending time around the barn all matter when you're choosing a horse for a child. π΄π
π All treats, no tricks with this girl.

π Meet Brandy, Our #1 Kid Horse! π
Some horses just understand kids, and Brandy is one of those special ones. Sheβs gentle, patient, quiet, and the kind of mare we trust with our young riders.
This video shows another important part of a good family horse: standing calmly and patiently while being handled π΄

π΄ BEGINNER SAFE vs. ADVANCED BEGINNER: WHATβS THE DIFFERENCE?
We use rider levels at A Ranch Horse for a reason. A horse can be quiet, gentle, and well-trained and still not be the right match for someone who has never ridden before.
Today, letβs talk about two levels buyers sometimes confuse: Beginner Safe and Advanced Beginner.
π BLAIR β’ BEGINNER SAFE
A beginner-safe horse should be forgiving of the mistakes that come with learning.
A beginner may still be figuring out balance, steering, stopping, rein pressure, and where to put their legs. They may accidentally bump the horse with a leg, pull a rein when they lose their balance, or give a cue they didn't mean to give.
A good beginner-safe horse should generally be patient and forgiving when those little mistakes happen.
For us, a beginner-safe horse should be:
β’ Calm and uncomplicated
β’ Easy to stop and steer
β’ Forgiving of imperfect cues
β’ Comfortable with a rider who is still learning
β’ Consistent and predictable
β’ More interested in taking care of the rider than reacting to every little mistake
Blair is a good example of the type of horse we classify as Beginner Safe.
𧑠RIVER ⒠ADVANCED BEGINNER
An advanced-beginner horse can still be a quiet, sensible horse. The difference is that the rider needs to have some basic riding skills.
An advanced beginner should already understand how to steer and stop independently, maintain their balance, use their reins and legs with purpose, and recognize that when they give a cue, the horse may respond to it.
River is responsive to her rider's cues. She isn't a horse we would put in the same category as a horse expected to overlook the mistakes of a brand-new rider. That's why we classify her as Advanced Beginner.
And this is important:
Advanced Beginner does NOT mean unsafe.
A responsive horse isn't automatically unsafe, just as a quiet horse isn't automatically suitable for every beginner. It's about finding the horse whose training, temperament, responsiveness, and experience match the rider's abilities.
β€οΈ WHY DO WE TAKE RIDER LEVELS SO SERIOUSLY?
Because the goal isn't simply to sell someone a horse.
The goal is to help match the right horse with the right rider.
When you're shopping for a horse, don't be afraid to tell the seller exactly where you are in your riding journey. There's nothing wrong with being a beginner. The more accurately we understand a rider's experience, the better we can help find a horse that allows that rider to feel comfortable, learn, and enjoy riding.

π΄ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE PURCHASING A HORSE?
Finding a horse you love is exciting, but before you load the trailer and head home, there are a few things worth slowing down for.
β€οΈ Be honest about your riding level.
Buy the horse that fits the rider you are today, not the rider you hope to become six months from now.
π Watch someone else ride first.
See the horse walk, trot and lope before you get in the saddle. Watch how the horse stops, turns and responds to the rider.
π€ Ride the horse yourself.
A horse can be wonderful for one rider and not be the right match for another. See how you feel in the saddle.
π΄ Spend time with the horse on the ground.
Watch the horse being caught, led, groomed and saddled. Pick up the feet. Good manners matter after the ride is over, too.
π³ Think about what you actually want to do.
Trail riding? Family riding? Lessons? Showing? A child's first horse? Look for a horse with experience doing the job you need.
π©Ί Consider a pre-purchase veterinary exam (PPE).
A PPE can give you more information about the horse before you make your final decision. At A Ranch Horse, vet checks and PPEs are always welcome.
β Ask questions. Lots of them.
Ask about the horse's temperament, habits, training, health and anything else that's important to you.
And most importantly:
Don't buy a horse simply because you fell in love with the color or the pretty face.
The prettiest horse in the pasture isn't necessarily the right horse for you.
The right horse is the one that fits your ability, your goals and your life. π
