Troy University Geospatial Informatics Department
The Geospatial Informatics Department at Troy University offers degrees in GIS and Geomatics
Our Basics of Surveying students stepped out today to turn their first angles. They were determining the direction change from one line to another. This was their first practice with the total station, an essential piece of equipment in the profession. Mastering it will be their primary focus for the rest of the semester.

It was great having Weygand LLC on campus today! Brian Krogsgard, Mary Kinley Overby, and Zeb Maze came down from Birmingham to spend some time getting to know our surveying students and talk about their work.
It was their first visit with us, and we’re looking forward to having them back! We’re also pretty sure the Moe’s BBQ helped make a good first impression. 😄 Thanks to Weygand LLC for spending the day with our students!

The Basics of Surveying lab is getting a little more technical. The students were doing more leveling, taking measurements and collecting data to develop an elevation model of the surrounding area. If you have ever walked around the Chapel, you know this is the perfect spot to study changes in elevation. And there was a little shade for relief😊Follow along to see what they are doing this week!

September 23 marks the 220th anniversary of Lewis and Clark’s return to St. Louis, concluding their now-famous 8,000-mile journey. It was an incredible feat of land surveying and cartography. Without modern tech, the Corps of Discovery relied on fundamental surveying tools to chart completely unknown territory. Clark was only off by 40 miles in his calculations of how far they had travelled! They mapped rivers and mountain ranges, calculated latitudes, and laid the groundwork for the geographic future of a continent. Every boundary line we survey today carries a piece of that same legacy: transforming the unknown into data we can trust.

Our series on the Basics of Surveying Lab continues after a week's break! The next step in taking accurate field measurements is learning how to properly level. In surveying, leveling isn't about matching the ground surface, it's about establishing a flat, horizontal line of sight to accurately measure elevation changes. In this lab, there were two points set in front of Wallace Hall where the ground isn’t quite level. Stay tuned for the next installment of Surveying 101.

Our visitors this week were from the Young Surveyors Network . Jonathan Nobles is Vice President, Matt Herrell is the coordinator for Alabama, and Rick Armond is the coordinator for Florida. The YSN serves as the bridge between the younger members of state professional surveyors societies and the more established members and provide connections and support that students will need when embarking upon their careers.
The Geospatial Informatics Department hosted a Welcome Party for new and returning students with lots of food provided by the faculty. Each students receive some department swag and the ASPLS chapter had a drawing for a t-shirt and hat. Each of the faculty spoke about our programs and themselves for few minutes and there was a short refresher on how to use Self-Service by our college advisor. The photo booth included masks of all the faculty and the party concluded with a trivia game about the department complete with prizes for the winners. We were very happy to see so many new faces and those older students who help maintain our special department culture.
