Barrio Hollywood 🏚️stands as a testament to enduring history. Originally named El Rio, it was nicknamed Barrio Hollywood, 🎬 in contrast with the glitz and glamour of its Californian namesake.

Yet beneath its gritty charm 🖼️ lies a vibrant community, composed of resilient low-income residents and steadfast business proprietors. Sadly, the landscape is changing as developers build luxury homes and rentals, 🤑pricing out those who have called this neighborhood home for generations. This wave of gentrification threatens to erode the very essence of Barrio Hollywood, displacing its people and diluting its character.

Nevertheless, the neighborhood remains a 🌮🌯culinary haven, with plenty of beloved eateries, both historic and contemporary. As we confront the age old issue of gentrification, my hope is to honor Barrio Hollywood’s rich heritage and safeguard its soul—preserving not just its buildings, but the cherished bonds that bind its people together. 😍

Join me at Saturdays Art walk and exhibition gallery warehouse@. 4-9 pm This piece along with over 70 artworks from local artists will be on exhibit and for sale.

I have recently been asked to create artwork of the iconic symbol, the Hamsa. While I had been topically aware of its meeting and commercial use, I looked forward to researching its origin, as the timing of this project coinciding with the most recent Israel/Gaza tragic events was unnerving. The Hamsa is an iconic symbol dating back to ancient Mesopotamia and is used in many cultures and religions, including Judaism and Islam. It is fascinating that a symbol is used similarly in Judaism and Islam as protection, strength and power. The Hamsa represents the Hand of Miriam, sister Moses, in the Jewish tradition, while Muslims refer to the symbol as the Hand of Fatima, daughter of Mohammed.

I have integrated these iconic women within the hand, facing each other, reflecting their desires for protection, respect and love. The outer fingers consist of two birds, flying away in opposite directions, with an olive branch, spreading their message. The eye in the center of the Hamsa is searching for leaders wishing to be voices for those who believe in building bridges through communication and non-violence.

This may seem simplistic and naïve, but history has shown there are alternatives to war and aggression. Bullies, and those with the loudest voice, (not always representing the voice of the majority) often get their way, Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, MLK, and others have proven there are successful alternatives.

All profits from this artwork will go to Doctors Without Borders who work selflessly and tirelessly in the region and worldwide.
