This is probably the most expensive rhodochrosite in my collection, and it is an absolutely beautiful piece.

There is no epoxy, no repair, nothing added. The crystals are total glass, with incredible color and isolation across the matrix. I usually gravitate toward smaller, highly isolated specimens, but this has all the same qualities I look for on a much larger scale. The quartz bursts, tetrahedrite, and contrast bring the entire piece together.

It is rare to find a rhodochrosite of this size with this level of quality and preservation. Definitely one of the most important pieces in my collection.

I have been fortunate enough to see a lot of incredible minerals over the years, and pieces like these are exactly why I still can’t get enough of it! ❤️

The colors, the forms, and the way every specimen has its own personality never gets old to me. Nature creates things that no artist could ever duplicate. No matter how many incredible minerals I see, I am still amazed that pieces like these can come out of the earth.

I could look at these all day. Which one are you taking? 🤔🤗😍

Michigan copper has been a passion of mine since I was young. Growing up in Wisconsin, Michigan was right next door, and these were some of the minerals I became interested in early on.

The pieces in this video represent roughly 25 years of collecting. Copper and calcite combinations, rare crystal habits, untouched natural patinas, historic museum tags, old provenance, and a few Michigan silvers with copper.

This is only a small part of the collection, but it gives you an idea of how special these pieces are and how difficult it is to put together a group like this. Many of them have not come out of the ground in hundreds of years, and some are objects Mother Nature may have only created once.

Here’s a slideshow of a few pieces from an incredible Michigan copper collection I recently had the chance to go through.

These are a few stills from the edit we’ve been working on. Along with some professional shots from Tom Spann |Thomas Spann, the full video will be up on YouTube later this week.

Some of these pieces represent over 2 decades of collecting, searching, passing on a lot of rocks, and waiting for the right ones.

Michigan copper is just different. The crystallization, calcite associations, natural patina, history, all of it. You simply do not see material like this being produced anymore, and in my opinion the really great old pieces are becoming harder and harder to replace.

A lot of the historic mines are closed, so when you see a truly special piece, you have to appreciate what you’re looking at. I’ve always loved the way old copper ages too. The patina is part of the story. It develops over decades, almost like w**e, and cleaning that away can remove part of what makes the piece special in the first place.

Mother Nature only made these once. 🙌

Full video on YouTube later this week.

Some pieces deserve another look. This rhodochrosite is absolutely one of them. 🤯❤️

Previously in Stephen Smale’s collection, it’s just totally a perfect object. A perfectly isolated rhombohedral crystal, incredible luster, and an aesthetic that makes it hard to put down.

Zero epoxy. Zero repairs. Pristine condition. 🙌

These are the things I chase. Minerals that feel like they’ve been preserved in a time capsule, never tampered with, and already so good that nothing needs to be improved. Mother Nature did the work.

I share more about this piece and the rest of my rhodochrosite collection in the full video, now available on YouTube. Link in bio.

Feel free to reach out with questions about collecting or acquiring fine minerals. 🤝

Packing for Denver is never as simple as it sounds. There are always more pieces we want to bring than we could possibly fit.

Here is Part Two of our Hardrock Summit preview, featuring a few more specimens currently being considered for the trip. Nothing is guaranteed until everything is packed, but there are some serious possibilities in this group.

Swipe through for a closer look. Each measurement shown represents the longest edge of the specimen.

Which one would you most want to see waiting for you at our booth?

For a long time, some of the best tourmalines in the world were coming out of Brazil. They had incredible color, but a lot of the great crystals really needed to be backlit to come alive.

Congo had produced tourmaline before, but when the extraordinary Rubaya material started reaching the market in the mid 2010s, and then major production came in 2017, it changed everything.

All of a sudden, we were seeing crystals with incredible color and saturation that still transmitted light in a way I had never really seen before. You could look straight down the C axis and actually see into the crystal.

That changed the standard for me.

It wasn’t just another great locality producing beautiful tourmalines. Rubaya showed us something different. It changed what I thought was possible with tourmaline and raised the bar for what I was looking for from that point forward.

And for me, it goes beyond just the minerals themselves. The stories I have from buying directly out of Congo, the people, the deals, the chase, and everything that came with getting these pieces is a huge part of what makes them so special to me.

That combination, the quality of the material and the history I have with it personally, is what makes these Congo tourmalines mean so much to me.
