Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked seventh on the IRC's 2026 Emergency Watchlist, meaning it is one of the top countries most at risk of a worsening humanitarian crisis in the coming year. Violence, displacement, and now an Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC have driven instability up and left millions of people in need of humanitarian aid. Yet even amidst all this, there is hope.

This World Refugee Day, we all can close the distance by recognizing that what connects us is stronger than what divides us. The search for refuge, dignity and belonging is not foreign. It is familiar.

The United Nations designated June 26th as it marks when the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishments came into effect in 1987. Yet in 2026, over 30 years later, torture continues to permeate societies around the world, despite it being an international crime.

The Arizona International Rescue Committee’s Survivors of Torture Program invites you to honor Survivors of Torture by participating in a multi-visual showcase, made in partnership with survivors living in Arizona. We hope that this experience helps educate on who survivors of torture are, what they have experienced, and what services are available to them.
