Family Weekend is upon us, when hordes of parents descend upon Tucson to see what exactly their beloved spawn have been up to down in the Dirty T. I myself have never received a visit from my parents during Family Weekend. Not because they hate me or anything, they just live in Phoenix and I go home often. Plus, what I stock my college-kid fridge with is between me, God and the Daily Wildcat community (four separate jars of pickles and approximately 23 different types of sauces). However, even without a parental visit, I can’t help but feel a vibe shift in the week leading up to Family Weekend, now called Bear Down Week as of last October.
Bear Down Week is meant to serve as a midterm morale boost during week six (notably, midterm isn’t technically until week eight but what am I, the academic calendar authority?), with a full slate of events culminating in the Fall Fest and Bear Down Friday on University Boulevard. According to Amanda Kraus, vice president for student affairs, Bear Down Week was created “as a chance to check in, remind them of resources and help them connect with our campus community.” Of course, that’s what they want you to think.

OPINION: Why isn’t every week like Bear Down Week? Bear Down Week and the events surrounding the lead up to Family Weekend revolve around student welfare and community. However, it feels like the real purpose of these events may be less altruistic, and a lot more commercial.

Community members gathered at the Philip Wallstead Memorial in Catalina Park for a candlelight vigil to honor the lives of Vincent Siqueiros and Cameron Capara. The two men were shot in the parking lot outside Tucson’s Venture-N bar in an anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime. Throughout the evening, crowd members chanted, “The people united will never be divided.”
Vincent’s sister Kate Marquez addressed the crowd, recalling a conversation she had with her brother six days before he died.
“At one point, he wondered aloud, ‘If something happened to me, who would actually be there?'” Kate Marquez said. Looking out over the crowd, Kate Marquez said, “Vincent, look who’s here.”

Two people were shot outside of Venture-N, a gay bar close to the University of Arizona campus, early Monday morning.
According to the Tucson Police Department, the shooting happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. The victims were identified as Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33. The shooting is under investigation as a hate crime. According to TPD, the suspect had a note with several LGBTQ+ associated businesses on it.
According to the Chief of Police, Monica Prieto, there is no imminent threat to the community, and TPD is working to provide extra protection to various LGBTQ+ businesses across town.
“Tucson is, and always has been, a diverse community where people of different backgrounds, identities and experiences call this city home. We are committed to ensuring every member of our community feels safe, valued and welcomed,” Prieto said.
A candlelight vigil honoring the victims is Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m at Catalina Park.

In Plato’s philosophical dialogue “Timaeus,” he wrote of a golden age where the nation of Atlantis prospered. Slowly this great empire’s morals decayed and the once seemingly invincible nation was dragged beneath the sea by an earthquake overnight.
Dormitories are kind of like Atlantis in that all seems to be going well one day and then an unforeseen disaster can bring it all crumbling to the ground. But unlike Atlantis, your roommates are very, very real.
Every year, wide-eyed idealistic freshmen walk into their dorms at the University of Arizona. By the end of their first spring semester, the gleam in their eyes disappears as they let the lease expire after one too many knock-down, drag-out arguments with their roommates.
These situations are preventable. So instead of having several panic attacks looking for new housing at the end of your first year, here are a few guidelines to save yourself future micro-aneurysms.

The collectors and I had the pleasure of interacting with were not concerned with eBay sales or condition. They were only interested in one thing. Completing their album.
It was as simple as that, something I was unable to grasp until I got a real-time crash course. In a sports world dominated by same game parlays, $1 million dollar courtside seats and $20 beers, the Panini FIFA World Cup Stickers were a beautifully innocent relic of a bygone time in sports.
While trading cards have long dominated the collectible sports space in America, the Panini FIFA World Cup Stickers are finally getting their moment in the States during their swan song here at the FIFA World Cup.

Three Arizona Wildcats were selected in the 2026 NBA Draft after their historic 29-2 season, which resulted in a Big 12 Championship and a Final Four appearance.
Brayden Burries entered the draft as one of the top guard prospects, and he sneaks into the top 10 as the Milwaukee Bucks officially pivots into a new era after moving on from franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Koa Peat, initially projected to go in the mid-to-late first round, ended up falling to the final pick of the first round where he stays in Arizona with the Suns.
Jaden Bradley, the Big 12 Player of the Year last season, is viewed as a high-floor prospect who will likely battle for immediate playing time this upcoming season after going 50th overall to the Toronto Raptors.
