Part 2 of 2 on timing replacement procedures and the 2 most common types you might encounter.

This video covers what I like to call type 2, timing belts with keyed crank pulley and timing mark but a cam pulley with no key way and no timing mark.

In this design it’s crucial to buy the tool kit that locks and crank and cam in place. You must install and tension the new belt with the cam gear bolt loose so it can free spin. This allows the tensioner to tension both sides of the belt. Then you torque the cam gear and remove the timing tools..

Note: you need an additional tool to hold the cam gear to remove and install the bolt as the timing tool isn’t strong enough to handle the 88lb ft of torque.

This cam bolt on this vehicle is also a one time use bolt that must be replaced during every timing belt replacement.

This goes for all 1.4l turbo or non turbo Multi air engines.

Although the example vehicle we are looking at is type 2, keyed crank with timing marks and a free spinning cam gear without timing marks. In this video I explain how to handle type 1 timing belt replacements.

Long crank to start? Check your fuel pressure. If it bleeds off quickly after shutting off the vehicle you’ve got an issue. Could be stuck open injector, fuel system leak or a bad check valve in the fuel tank on the pump assembly.

Fuel injectors only work if the fuel rail has pressure as they operate like a gate that opens and closes. If there’s no pressure behind the gate then no fuel passes when the injector opens.

Fuel pressure must remain in the fuel rail at all times for proper operation.

Removing brake rotor screws with the correct tool for the job.

Can’t fine a drawing on gasket orientation? Perhaps there’s some clues left behind on the old gasket.
