This is play based learning. Not sitting on the sidelines watching the learners interacting. It’s being on the floor with them, being part of the storyline and letting them lead the play.

✏️ Did you know drawing is an important part of learning to write?

This may look like a child simply drawing and decorating a picture, but there is SO much kindergarten readiness happening here!

When preschoolers draw, color, and add letters to their work, they are developing the same skills they will eventually use to write words and sentences. They’re strengthening the small muscles in their hands, practicing pencil control, learning how lines and shapes come together to form letters, and beginning to understand that marks on paper can communicate an idea.

At almost 5, we want children to move beyond simply copying letters and begin using drawing and writing to tell us something. A picture becomes a label. A label becomes a phrase. Eventually, those phrases become sentences and stories.

You may notice letters that are different sizes, writing that doesn’t stay on a line, or words spelled exactly the way they sound. That’s not something we rush to correct; it’s part of learning! These early attempts help children connect the sounds they hear in spoken language to the letters they put on paper.

Drawing → ideas → letters → sounds → words → sentences.

So when you see us spending time drawing in preschool, we aren’t taking a break from academics. This IS early literacy and it’s building the foundation they’ll take with them into kindergarten. ❤️
