🎶🔊Hey Blues Family Happy Blues Groovy Birthday to Sammy Price 🎸
🎶This Day in Blues History! 🎶.
On this day in 1908, legendary blues and jazz pianist Sammy Price was born in Honey Grove, Texas! 🎹✨

Known for his driving barrelhouse blues and boogie-woogie style, Price was a powerhouse in the studio and on the stage. In the early 1940s, he led his own band, "Sam Price and His Texas Bluesicians," and became a staple session pianist for Decca Records, backing icons like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Trixie Smith, and Peetie Wheatstraw.
Price's rhythm wasn't just limited to the keys—he actually won a statewide Charleston dance contest at age 15 before his music career took off. Later in life, he proved his impact extended far beyond the bandstand, stepping away from music in the 1960s to become a fierce political activist and civil rights advocate in Harlem.
Drop a 🎹 in the comments to honor a true architect of the Texas piano blues sound! What’s your favorite boogie-woogie track to spin? Let us know below! 👇

🎶🔊Hey Blues Family 🎸 🎶This Day in Blues History! 🎶.
Did you know that Howlin' Wolf's 1954 Chess Records single "Forty Four" changed the trajectory of rock and roll?
https://youtu.be/peog80pRDps?is=GdB94mDiOXRUOyHy
Even Robert Plant couldn't get enough of it. During a BBC Radio 6Music appearance, Plant cited the track as one of the most important, universally beloved blues songs within the rock realm.
"The bands I’ve been around, everybody just marvels about the cross timing of that stuff," Plant recalled, pointing to Wolf’s massive influence—not just on Led Zeppelin, but on the entire 1960s rock scene.
Plant's love for Howlin' Wolf (born Chester Arthur Burnett) goes way back: "I saw the Wolf when I was 16... Two German promoters brought over a remarkable collection of musicians: Skip James, Bukka White, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, the Wolf, Muddy Waters..." That very lineup essentially served as the blueprint for Led Zeppelin’s heavy, blues-drenched sound.
But what makes "Forty Four" so legendary?
Recorded in October 1954 at Chess Studios in Chicago, "Forty Four" was an electrifying transformation of a Louisiana blues standard. By this point, Howlin' Wolf was a towering, imposing figure in his mid-40s with a voice that didn't just sing the blues—it roared them.
The track was a watershed moment. It took the deep, barrelhouse piano roots of the original song and electrified it with the gritty, aggressive Chicago blues style. Wolf's menacing vocals and harmonica, paired with Otis Spann's relentless piano and Hubert Sumlin and Jody Williams' driving guitars, created a heavy, rhythmic tension—that "insane cross timing" Plant was talking about.
It wasn't just a song; it was a statement.
The sheer power and attitude of the recording captivated a generation of British teenagers in the 1960s who were hungry for something raw and authentic. Without "Forty Four," and Howlin' Wolf's larger-than-life presence, the hard rock explosion of the late '60s and '70s would have sounded very, very different.
Drop a 🐺 in the comments if Howlin' Wolf is in your record collection! What's your favorite track?
