➤ Over the past 24 hours, Tulsa Fire Department crews responded to multiple carbon monoxide (CO) related emergencies, according to the corporation. One of the incidents occurred around 11:00 p.m., when Station 18 responded to a 911 call for a CO alarm emitting flashing signals and a resident reporting unwell.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters determined the detector was expired and was functioning incorrectly. Nevertheless, the owner decided to be taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and potentially deadly gas, so authorities reiterate the importance of recognizing the symptoms of a possible poisoning. These include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, confusion, vomiting, chest pain, vision problems and loss of consciousness. Children, older adults, pregnant women and people with heart or lung conditions can be affected more quickly.

⚠️ • Authorities recommend that, in case of any suspected CO exposure, people immediately go outdoors, call 911 and do not return to the home until emergency crews indicate it is safe to do so.

Tulsa Fire Department also recalled the importance of periodically checking carbon monoxide detectors and replacing them when they have expired, as most have a lifespan of between 5 and 10 years.
