Did you know that a second pregnancy ultrasound at 60–70 days of gestation can be one of the most valuable reproductive management tools in your herd?

A cow can test pregnant early and still experience embryonic or early fetal loss before reaching 60–70 days. That’s why confirming the pregnancy again at this stage gives us important information about the true reproductive status of the herd.

This period is an important checkpoint for pregnancy establishment and fetal development. By reconfirming pregnancies, we can:

👁️ EYE EXENTERATION vs. ENUCLEATION 👁️

Not all eye surgeries are the same. When disease affects the eye and surrounding tissues, choosing the appropriate surgical procedure is critical.

🔹 ENUCLEATION
Enucleation is the surgical removal of the eyeball itself, while leaving the surrounding orbital tissues largely intact. It may be performed when the eye is severely damaged, painful, blind, or affected by certain tumors confined primarily to the globe.

🔹 EXENTERATION
Exenteration is a more extensive procedure. It involves removal of the entire globe along with surrounding orbital tissues, which may include the extraocular muscles, conjunctiva, and other affected tissues.

In cattle, exenteration can be indicated for advanced ocular tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma (cancer eye) when the disease extends beyond the eyeball and involves surrounding structures.

🩺 Why does the distinction matter?
The goal is not simply to remove the eye—it is to remove all affected tissue while preserving the animal’s health, comfort, and quality of life. Proper evaluation of the lesion and surrounding tissues helps determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

🚨 UTERINE PROLAPSE: EVERY SECOND COUNTS! 🐄

A uterine prolapse is a true emergency that requires prompt veterinary attention. The uterus can become severely swollen, contaminated, traumatized, and—if not addressed quickly—life-threatening hemorrhage can occur.

🔹 Standing cow:
Some pr*****ed uteri can be successfully replaced while the cow is standing. Proper restraint, cleaning, reduction of swelling, and careful replacement are critical.

🔹 Down cow:
When the cow is recumbent, positioning is extremely important. The hind legs should be carefully flexed back toward the cow to help prevent the uterus from being compressed or further traumatized by the legs during replacement.

⚠️ Never pull aggressively on a pr*****ed uterus. The tissue is fragile, and tearing can result in severe bleeding and additional complications.

Once the uterus is replaced, the cow should be monitored closely for shock, bleeding, recurrence, and other postpartum complications.
