Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum
A working museum, print shop, type shop, gallery & store in Two Rivers, WI. Hamilton is open Wednesday - Saturday.
The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton's collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world. In addition to wood type, the Museum is home to an amazing array of advertising cuts from the 1930s through the 1970s, and all of the equipment necessary to make wood type and print with it, as well as equipment used in the production of hot metal type, tools of the craft and rare type specimen catalogs. Hamilton staff host educational demonstrations, field trips, workshops and offer opportunities for artists, printers, historians and other scholars to experiment with this vast wood type collection. Self guided tours are available anytime during our regular business hours. Please contact the museum at [email protected] or (920) 794-6272 for more information or to schedule a group visit.

Type High Day celebrates this remarkable continuity: a piece of wood type carved over one hundred years ago can still sit perfectly alongside a modern 3D-printed block on the same press because both are made to the same precise printing height - 0.918 inches tall.
This 918 is part of the Globe Collection acquired from Chicago collector Frank Zimmermann. The collection included a mid-20th-century wood type and more than 2,000 one-of-a-kind, hand-carved printing plates, all delivered to the museum on 32 pallets. #918

"Set In Type" tells the story of how the printed word helped shape civic life in America. Through the history of Hamilton Manufacturing this exhibition shows how wood type and printing innovation changed the way people shared information across the country.
The objects in this gallery are more than printing tools and posters. They tell the story of how print helped people stay informed, gather together, and take part in their communities. From public notices to entertainment posters, the printed word helped shape everyday life in America.
Every print in this exhibition was hand printed by the staff and volunteers of Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum using historic presses, wood type, and original printing plates. Inspired by America's 250th anniversary, they selected images, type, and printing techniques that reflect the people, events, and ideas that have shaped our nation.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
"Set In Type" will be on display through December 2026.
