Socrates Onassis and Penelope (nΓ©e Dologlou), the parents of Aristotle Onassis.
Socrates Onassis (1874-1932) was one of seven children of Haralambos Onassoglou and Gethsemane (nΓ©e Antonopoulou). His siblngs were Kyriakos, Ioannis, Vasileios, Alexandros, Maria and Omiros. His father Haralambos was a wealthy property owner and merchant. The family was from Moutalaski (today Talas) in the Cappadocia region but moved to Smyrna around 1895 where they Europeanised their name to Onassis.
In 1901, at the age of 27, Socrates married Penelope Dologlou (1881-1911) and they settled in the suburb of Melantia, (Tr: KarataΕ), a district of Smyrna. In 1902, the couple had a daughter Artemis followed by Aristotle in 1906. In 1911, Penelope died at the age of 30 and Socrates' mother Gethsemane went to live with the family to raise the children. A year later, Socrates was married a second time to Eleni Tzortzoglou (1887-1962). He had two daughters with his second wife; Meropi and Calliroi.
Socrates and his brother Omiros ran a merchant business from , trading in cotton, cereals, to***co, raisins sugar and other goods. The brothers also carried out banking operations. Their other brother, Vasileios was also involved in the financial operations while another of the brothers became the representative of Standard Oil in Smyrna.
During the Smyrna Holocaust of September 1922, brothers Basil and Ioannis were transported to a concentration camp in the interior. Alexandros was arrested by the Kemalists and hanged in the public square. The husband of Socrates' sister, Chrysostomos Konialidis and one of their children hid in a church in the town of Thyatira with five hundred others and they were all burned alive. Only seventeen of the Onassis family survived the Holocaust of 1922. Tragically, Aristotle's grandmother Gethsemane survived the fire and escaped from the Turks, however upon disembarking in Pireaus, she was attacked by a gang of thieves who tried to take her purse. In the struggle she died.
While some of the family escaped the fire, Socrates stayed behind to protect his properties and was arrested. Aristotle also remained and was able to secure money from his father's office and sent some of it to his father who was imprisoned and kept the rest for his family who had fled. Aristotle then fled to Lesvos after being pressured by his father. Socrates remained in prison for a while until he was released with the help of Turkish businessmen friends.
In describing the events of September 1922, Socrates wrote: "What happened in September of 1922 is well known. Along with another 1.5 million souls, half my family paid in blood the price of the ethnicity that you are denying me. Some were hanged, others were burnt alive, and others were shot to death."
