"The Long Strange Trip of the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope"

at the InfoAge Space Exploration Center

2300 Marconi Road
Wall, NJ 07719
Sunday September 27th, 2026
2:00 PM

Most great observatories have similar stories of origin. Years of science requirements, design studies, and budget projections are necessary. In contrast, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s story begins 30 years ago with an ultra-secret spy agency, a government contract cancelled for poor performance, and the need to clear out storage space. From these events, NASA’s newest observatory was created. Complementing Hubble and the new Webb telescopes, the Roman telescope will explore the nature of Dark Matter in the Universe and will directly image planets light-years away.

On a windswept stretch of Wall Township, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company built one of the most powerful radio stations on earth in 1914, tall masts strung with aerials meant to hurl messages clear across the Atlantic Ocean. 📡 Long before satellites, this quiet corner of the Jersey Shore was how America talked to Europe.

The site kept making history. The Army took it over as Camp Evans, and during World War II the scientists there helped develop radar, the technology that let the Allies see planes and ships coming in the dark. Some of the earliest work bouncing radio signals off the moon happened on this very ground.

Today the old station lives on as the InfoAge Science and History Museum, where you can walk the same halls where the future was invented. Most people drive right past it with no idea. 🌍

Did you know New Jersey held a front-row seat to the birth of radio and radar, and have you ever visited InfoAge?

Circulator [1] for the P25 radio repeater [2] being built for MARCH at Camp Evans.

Why P25 instead of analog FM? It allows reasonably strong encryption, and it's the same technology public safety uses.

FAKE EDIT - the rack tray was salvaged from an 800 MHz system, the MARCH system is in the UHF commercial band.
