As we have done many times over the past 35 years, SUNY WCC Workforce Development recently celebrated the success of the latest cohort of ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (www.sunywcc.edu/project-transition/), a specialized 8-week, full-time program for โ€œdisplaced homemakersโ€ to become economically independent by returning to the paid workforce after raising children or taking care of relatives.

We extend our sincerest congratulations to all the completers! You join the many hundreds of Project Transition alumni who, over the years, have built the skills, resources and confidence needed to thrive in the labor market.

The Project Transition program is intensive. Classes taught by Lisa Bart, Peter Gedney and Linda Hogan updated and refined computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, LinkedIn, social media, and online networking; several students are currently preparing for the Microsoft Office Specialist exams.

Instructor Heather Murphy provided extensive Career Counseling & Job Search Skills coaching to explain how the labor market has changed in recent years. She worked with students to identify living wage career options that match strengths and interests; craft resumes that highlight work history and non-traditional skills; develop interview confidence; and prepare targeted online job search strategies.

Unlike past completion ceremonies, this one was bittersweet. Sadly, Project Transition at SUNY WCC is coming to an end after over 35 years.

We thank the many staff, instructors and students who have contributed to Project Transitionโ€™s success over the years. We especially want to recognize current program director Jill Wallen, and SUNY WCC Program Administrator Kristine Bunyea, who has been involved with Project Transition since 1994.

Project Transition is going away, but the fundamental mission of SUNY Westchester Workforce Development to prepare people for workplace success continues through the many affordable, open-enrollment professional certification trainings on offer this Fall (bit.ly/WDCE-Fall-2026).

Westchester residents who receive benefits through Westchester County Department of Social Services may be eligible for the ๐‰๐จ๐›๐’๐“๐€๐‘ program (www.sunywcc.edu/jobstar) that provides education and skills training at no-cost.

New Yorkers who meet the โ€œdisplaced homemakerโ€ criteria may be able to enroll in one of the other Displaced Program Providers across New York State (https://dol.ny.gov/services-displaced-homemakers), the nearest at Bronx Community College (www.bcc.cuny.edu/a-path-back-to-work-for-parents-and-caregivers/).

Westchester Organizations Offer College and Career Opportunities 08/13/2026

914INC. recently covered four Westchester programs that work with local colleges to create opportunities for low-income residents. Two of the programs specifically involve SUNY Westchester Community College:

๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐–๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ: www.thestemalliance.org/connect-westchester
This initiative, a collaboration among The STEM Alliance, WCA and Westchester County, targets the 50,000+ local households in need of the essential technology, internet access, and digital skills required to obtain good jobs and participate in modern life.

Connect Westchester's digital skills classes -- including those taught by SUNY WCC staffer Carney Burns -- have reached over 1,100 residents, with more than 1,300 Chromebooks distributed to date.

๐’๐”๐๐˜ ๐‘๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ญ (www.sunywcc.edu/suny-reconnect), launched in the fall of 2025, provides no-cost associate degrees at SUNY Westchester Community College (and other SUNY schools) in high-demand fields for residents aged 25 to 55 with no prior college degree. The program covers costs of tuition, fees, books, and supplies for eligible residents.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Calling all Westchester small entrepreneurs! Enter SUNY Westchester's LevelUp! Pitch Competition this October for a chance to receive expert coaching and win funding that can take your small business idea to the next level.

โžก๏ธ What is the LevelUp Pitch Competition?

This annual competition hosted by SUNY Westchester's Gateway to Entrepreneurism helps early-stage entrepreneurs move from promising ideas to sustainable businesses. Participants complete entrepreneurship training and receive coaching to refine their business models and pitches before presenting to a panel of judges. Top competitors are awarded seed funding to help launch or expand their ventures.

โžก๏ธ How do I sign up?

Complete the application form on the Gateway to Entrepreneurship & Small Business webpage: www.sunywcc.edu/entrepreneurship

โžก๏ธ Is it really worth it?

Our past participants certainly think so. Cynthia Schmits received a pitch award in September 2025 for her line of 100% pure, locally sourced spices that are free of fillers and MSG. Incorporating marketing feedback she received from the judges has "increased my sales by 50 to 60%. People are now buying full box sets instead of just one jar, and it made my elevator pitch much stronger." The seed funding enabled her to secure a seasonal vendor space at a local shopping mall, increasing her business visibility during the holiday season.
