1 piece of jewelry can be worth more than an entire estate.....you need to accept that.
Homes, stocks, gold, and silver all went up in value in the past few years so a common way of thinking for many folks over the age of 60 is, "My china set, heirloom portrait painting, oak furniture, and that Asian bowl I bought from Macy's in the 70s should have gone up in price too, right?"
Unfortunately no.
The most difficult part about my job is letting my clients know that the items they purchased in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s have not appreciated since they bought them. Several factors play into this; however, on the bright side, many other investments they made have gone up in value.
Gold and silver are a great way to recoup losses. Even though antiques and collectibles should never be seen as investments.
Overall, what makes a great estate sale is a mixture of items that appeal to all types of customers:
1.) Garage items and tools
2.) Misc. household items worth under $10
3.) Oil Paintings by "listed artists"
4.) Mid-Century furniture
5.) Asian antiques pre-1900
6.) Funky glassware
7.) House plants and outdoor patio décor
8.) Outdoor furniture
9.) General collectibles with a value over $100
10.) Vintage and antique toys
***Gold and silver jewelry is never in my sales. Its purchased and sold beforehand.

Heading for Alaska. These two paintings are going to a private collector of Black Alabama Folk art. The pair sold for $400.

Look closely at these 8 paintings. 👀
Skulls, w**e glasses, wedding portraits, an artist at his easel — each one tells a story. And somewhere in Sarasota, Manatee, or Charlotte County right now, there's a painting just like one of these hanging in someone's hallway... and nobody in the house has any idea what it actually is.
These are "Old Master" paintings — work by trained European painters from roughly the 1600s to 1800s. You don't need an art history degree to have one. They show up in inherited homes, estate sales, and closets more often than people think — sometimes dismissed as "just an old picture," sometimes overhyped as "probably worth a fortune." The truth is usually somewhere in between, and you won't know which until someone actually looks at it.
Here's what I tell people all the time: the frame doesn't tell you the value. The signature doesn't always tell you the value. Even the age doesn't tell you the value. What matters is knowing what you're actually looking at — and that's exactly what I do.
If you've got a painting like this in your home (or you're helping a parent or family member sort through one), I'll take a look and give you a straight answer — no pressure, no obligation.

Do you have artwork that looks like this? Well, it may not be worth what you think!
These paintings are extremely common and, at many times, were mass-produced in China and imported here to the US.
So that American/English name signed at the bottom was added for the appearance of a "western" made piece of art.
Typical Value: $30-$100

Do you have paintings like this in your home?
This painting by Thomas B. Craig sold for $1,000 at auction for a client of mine in Manatee County, Florida. He inherited the artwork from his mother and the piece had been collecting dust in the closet for some time.
