We are absolutely loving these collars! 🤩

We just moved a group of yearling heifers and pairs onto a new lease that only has fencing on two sides. A few years ago, grazing this pasture would have been a huge challenge. Now, with virtual fencing, we can confidently utilize ground that otherwise would have been difficult to manage.

One thing we’ve really noticed is how calm the cattle are with the collars. They seem less stressed during moves, and overall handling has been smoother and easier on both us and the animals.

These collars have been a complete game changer for our rotational grazing program. They give us the flexibility to move cattle when and where we need them, make better use of available forage, and help us manage our pastures more efficiently, all without miles of new fence.

They’ve also been incredibly helpful for monitoring the herd. We can quickly spot when a cow might be sick or injured, and if we need to pull an animal off pasture, like a bull, we can simply lock him into a loading pen with a few girls so he’s ready and waiting when we arrive.

A big thank you to the Montana Grazing Lands Coalition for helping offset the cost of this technology through their grant program. Their support has helped us continue implementing more effective grazing practices, and we’re excited to keep learning and improving our grazing management.

Spring is here, the water is running, and grazing season is officially underway at 7B Farmstead.

This year we’re trying something new that we’re really excited about….Virtual fencing collars! Instead of relying only on physical fence, these collars allow us to control where cattle graze using GPS boundaries.

With support from the Montana Grazing Lands Coalition, we received a grant that helped offset the cost of implementing this system and demonstrating how it can work on small and leased properties like ours.

What this means for our operation:

• Better pasture management and more even grazing
• Ability to extend our grazing season and reduce hay use
• Making use of leased ground that has poor or limited fencing
• Protecting sensitive areas like waterways and riparian zones
• More flexibility across multiple properties

We run on a mix of owned and leased ground, and this gives us a practical way to manage all of it more efficiently while improving the land at the same time.

We’ll be tracking how this impacts pasture recovery, grazing efficiency, and overall herd management.

There will be a field day in June in partnership with Ravalli County Economic Development Authority, and we’ll share more details as they’re available.

We’re excited to share what we learn along the way. This feels like a big step forward for grazing in places like the Bitterroot where ground is fragmented and fencing isn’t always ideal.
