Juneteenth is a meaningful opportunity for families to learn about an important chapter in American history and celebrate the values of freedom, perseverance, and community.

Whether through books, conversations, local events, or time spent together, learning about our shared history helps children better understand the world around them.

Wishing all who celebrate a joyful and meaningful Juneteenth.

πŸ“šβ˜€οΈ Looking for Free Summer Fun for Kids & Teens? β˜€οΈπŸ“š

This summer, make reading an adventure!

The Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Adventure, "Unearth a Story," runs from June 17 through August 19 and encourages readers of all ages to discover new books, attend library events, and keep learning all summer long.

We especially love our neighbors at Tysons Pimmit Regional Library, which offers:
πŸ“– Summer reading programs for children and teens
🎨 Crafts and special events
πŸ‘Ά Storytimes for younger children
πŸ“š A welcoming space to read, learn, and explore year-round

Other great local library options include:
πŸ“š Patrick Henry Library in Vienna
πŸ“š Oakton Library

Reading during the summer helps children maintain literacy skills, build vocabulary, spark imagination, and reduce the "summer slide."

πŸ’§ Healthy Hydration Starts with Water πŸ’§

As temperatures rise and kids become more active, staying hydrated becomes even more important. Water is the best choice for keeping children healthy, energized, and hydrated throughout the day β˜€οΈ

Why choose water?
βœ”οΈ Supports healthy growth and development
βœ”οΈ Helps kids stay focused and active
βœ”οΈ Keeps the body cool during outdoor play
βœ”οΈ Avoids excess added sugars found in many drinks

Simple ways to encourage more water:
πŸ₯€ Carry reusable water bottles
πŸ“ Add fruit for natural flavor
⏰ Offer water regularly throughout the day
πŸƒ Encourage water breaks during sports & outdoor activities

Healthy hydration habits built in childhood can last a lifetime πŸ’™

β˜€οΈ Sun Safety Starts Early β˜€οΈ

Longer days and outdoor play are some of the best parts of summerβ€”but protecting your child’s skin is important all season long.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:
🧴 Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+)
πŸ•ΆοΈ Wear hats and protective clothing
🌳 Take shade breaks, especially during peak sun hours
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated during outdoor activities

Remember: sunburns in childhood can increase the risk of skin damage later in life. Helping kids build healthy sun safety habits now can protect them for years to come πŸ’™

Questions about summer safety or your child’s health? We’re here to help.

Summer brings fun, flexibility, and a change of paceβ€”but kids still benefit from routines β˜€οΈ

Simple daily structure can help support better sleep, smoother behavior, emotional well-being, and easier transitions throughout the summer months.

A few ways to help prepare:
🌱 Keep bedtimes somewhat consistent
🌱 Balance activities with downtime
🌱 Encourage outdoor play and movement
🌱 Maintain regular meals and healthy snacks
🌱 Set screen time expectations early

Routines don’t need to be rigidβ€”just predictable enough to help kids feel secure and supported πŸ’™

In addition, starting next week, Advanced Pediatrics will post about local activities you can do with your kids, to keep your whole family having fun this summer. Stay tuned!

Changes in routineβ€”like the end of the school year, vacations, or summer activitiesβ€”can affect both sleep and mood for children and teens 😴

When kids aren’t getting enough quality sleep, it may show up as irritability, emotional outbursts, trouble focusing, or increased anxiety. Maintaining a consistent bedtime routine can help support emotional well-being during seasonal transitions.

Helpful reminders:
βœ”οΈ Keep bedtimes consistent when possible
βœ”οΈ Limit screens before bed
βœ”οΈ Encourage calming nighttime routines
βœ”οΈ Make sure kids are getting enough sleep for their age

If sleep concerns are affecting your child’s daily life, our team at Advanced Pediatrics is here to help.
