Pe*******on Hurts?
Let's see if we can't change that with a game plan of sorts.

Scroll through my dears! It's time to get sexy. 😜

We often put a lot of emphasis on the actual art or sport itself when working with athletes. What’s going wrong in practice/rehearsal or in the game/performance? What skills are they lacking to successfully perform? Etc.
However, there’s a lot that needs to be addressed that may not even be related to said art/sport.

This is a hierarchy of needs that really EVERYONE needs to look at.

1. PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS - are their hydration, nutrition, psychical activity, physical safety, shelter, sleep, rest/recovery, etc. needs being met? You’d be surprised at this answer! START HERE!

2. PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS - Next. Do they have a sense of belonging, trust, consistency, and collaboration?

3. CULTURE/VALUES - What about different roles, boundaries, standards, structures, expectations? Are they different from what they are use to? How are they adjusting to it if so?

4. SELF-EFFICACY - How’s the athlete/performer’s self-esteem, confidence, respect, recognition, autonomy? Let’s dig and build it up if needed!!

FINALLY!!!

5. PERFORMANCE - Now that the basics have been addressed look at the performance aspect. The commitment, risk, approach, learning/growth orientation that the athlete/performer has.

It’s a play on Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, but it’s applicable in many ways. Again, it’s easy to hyper focus on the actual sport/art. Realistically, it’s typically much more than just that.

I’m no Freudian, but he has a point here.

We learn in times we struggle. In that, we grow and find ourselves in the process.

*Friendly reminder*

We try so hard to present a picture perfect life. In reality, we are all far from perfect. Everyone has their flaws. Everyone has their struggles. No one is their “highlight real.”

It’s okay to struggle. It’s 1000% okay to fail! You learn from failure. Heck, you grow from failure!

Be okay with doing your best everyday. Even if it’s not exactly what you had envisioned. A win is a win. No matter how big or small.

Hi friends! I thought I’d pop on here and introduce myself. My name is Taylor, and I’m a professional counselor that has recently transplanted to Waco, Texas from Oklahoma.

My goal as your therapist is to help those that come into my office find their emotional strength and own their story. Sometimes that requires uncomfortable discussions, feelings, and most of all, honesty. But with that, there is growth.

I love working with Athletes and peri/post partum depression and anxiety. BUT that doesn’t mean I only work with that population. Big life transitions? Awesome. Let’s work together! Self-concept issues? Let’s kick that s**t to the curb.

My point being, whatever you’re struggling with, let’s work together to figure it out and make you the best version of yourself possible!
