September is National Preparedness Month, a good reminder that being ready for an emergency starts at home.

Severe weather, power outages, fires and other unexpected events can happen with little warning. Taking a few simple steps now can help protect your household and make it easier to respond when something goes wrong.

Start by making sure you have an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications and important documents. Know how to safely shut off utilities if necessary, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and make a family communication plan so everyone knows where to go and how to reconnect.

It is also a good time to review your homeowners or renters insurance and make sure your coverage reflects your current needs.

Preparedness does not have to be complicated. A little planning today can make a big difference when an emergency happens.

September is National Preparedness Month

A little preparation today can make a big difference when the unexpected happens.

National Preparedness Month is a reminder for homeowners and renters to take simple steps to protect their households, homes and finances before an emergency occurs.

Start by creating an emergency plan, assembling a supply kit and keeping copies of important financial, insurance and housing documents in a safe place. Homeowners and renters can also review their insurance coverage, document valuable belongings and work toward building emergency savings for unexpected expenses.

Preparedness goes beyond having supplies on hand. It also means being financially prepared to recover and move forward when life doesn’t go according to plan.

Take time this month to make sure you and your household are ready.

What Does a Mortgage Loan Officer Actually Do?

A mortgage loan officer can be one of your most important resources when preparing to buy a home. But their role involves much more than processing a loan application.

From helping you understand your financial picture and exploring mortgage options to explaining documentation requirements and guiding you through the lending process, a loan officer can help make a complicated process easier to understand.

In recognition of National Mortgage Professionals Month, our latest blog breaks down what a mortgage loan officer actually does, how their role differs from a homeownership counselor, and why you don’t need to have everything figured out before starting the conversation.
