Last week, 22 participants representing six continents wrapped up their IVLP on Freedom of Speech and Democracy.

The exchange began in Washington, DC, before participants continued to Georgia, Wisconsin, and North Carolina to explore how free speech, government transparency, journalism, and digital rights play out at the state and local levels.

The group reunited in Boston to close the program with conversations on cybersecurity, the First Amendment, and public trust in the information age.

International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State

World Learning has a long history of helping educators strengthen the English skills they need for their professional contexts.

From 2017 to 2024, World Learning delivered English for Teachers programming in India, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Brazil, expanding as U.S. embassies requested the program in new countries.

The program followed a three-phase train-the-trainer model: LEARN, APPLY, and EXTEND. Participants experienced the course, trained to facilitate it, and then brought the program to other educators in their communities.

Across the four countries, 385 local facilitators supported 2,836 teachers, with the potential to reach more than 283,600 English language students annually.

By building local capacity, the program equipped educators to continue sharing knowledge and strengthening their communities.

In July, government and industry leaders from across Southeast Asia traveled to Alabama through the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) to explore how the United States is strengthening critical mineral supply chains.

The participants visited communities across Alabama, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Alexander City, and Coosa County. Along the way, they met with local experts and learned about mining and workforce training, graphite production and processing, advanced materials manufacturing, and regional economic development.

Bevill State mining program welcomes international visitors SUMITON - It’s not every day that Bevill State Community College hosts a group of international leaders from various countries, but it indeed happened on Friday, July 10.

Earlier this year, World Learning partnered with Navoi State University of Mining and Technologies to offer English for Mining Professionals, a massive open online course (MOOC) for 167 participants in Uzbekistan.

The course used an English for specific purposes approach, combining an engaging storyline with practical communication tasks, interactive technology, and supported speaking practice.

Participants reported gains in technical vocabulary and overall English comprehension, greater confidence in speaking and writing, and stronger technology and communication skills relevant to their work.

Global UGRAD Program Youth Ambassadors The Fulbright Program Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State

This May, nearly 200 early-career English teachers from Central Asia completed their year-long skills and professional development training through the C5 + O.N.E. Ed program. During the program, participants completed three phases: an online course, a month-long in-person workshop, and participant-run professional development activities. Through the participant-run activities, over 8,500 teachers in Central Asia were impacted.
