Department of Transportation, was established by the Highway Safety Act of 1970, as the successor to the National Highway Safety Bureau, to carry out safety programs under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 and the Highway Safety Act of 1966. The Vehicle Safety Act has subsequently been recodified under Title 49 of the U. Code in Chapter 301, Motor Vehicle Safety. NHTSA also carries out consumer programs established by the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Savings Act of 1972, which has been recodified in various Chapters under Title 49.

Today we remember their sacrifices. We also honor the courage of the first responders, transportation workers, and all of those who answered the call of duty that day to serve the country.
Their bravery will never be forgotten. They are the patriots who make America the greatest country in the world.

Knowing how to safely yield helps emergency responders get where they need to go. If an emergency vehicle is approaching, stay alert, safely move out of its path and follow your state's laws.
🚨 When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights, move into a non-adjacent lane or slow down if you can't safely change lanes. Move Over laws are in all 50 states!
