In elementary school, Olivia Cooley (C’23, G’27) set her heart on attending Georgetown after she saw Raven-Symoné’s character tour the university in the Disney movie “College Road Trip.”

Falling in love with DC during an eighth-grade field trip sealed the deal, and Cooley’s life has been tied to Georgetown since.

The year that she graduated with her bachelor’s in sociology, Cooley’s father was named the head coach of Georgetown’s men’s basketball team. Olivia Cooley joined the university’s Advancement staff in 2024 as a development associate for family philanthropy, and in 2025 she started her master’s degree in Engaged and Public Humanities (ENPH) part-time through Georgetown’s employee Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).

She said her dual perspective within Georgetown, as a staff member and now student times two, gives her a renewed appreciation for the work that goes into university operations and the care Hoya community members express for each other.

“It’s nice to have those support networks around campus and see familiar faces,” Cooley said. “And it’s not just student engagement. You get to know better all the different people who’ve seen you studying or being part of a program, club or other organization around Georgetown as an undergrad. It’s always nice to keep those little connections.”

At Georgetown University Berkley School of Nursing, nurses learn policy education and engagement alongside clinical work. "Nurses are such an important voice for advocacy," says Stephan Davis (G '09).

Since 2020, the Berkley School of Nursing has made a conscious effort to implement policy education and engagement in curriculums across the school, teaching students the importance of frontline healthcare worker advocacy in policy conversations.

"Nurses are the ones that people open up to, the ones who have those initial conversations about social factors that are determining health outcomes—food security, housing security, affordable insurance," says Julia Strimling (N'26).

A gift to Georgetown Law from John DeQ. Briggs (L’72) will fund an endowed professorship in antitrust law. Briggs’ own 50-plus year career in antitrust law and competition policy matters includes founding the Washington, DC, office of Axinn law firm, serving for over a decade as the chair of the antitrust practice for Howrey LLP, the largest private antitrust practice in the world at the time, and more.

“This gift is in recognition of all the things Georgetown did for me that I never could have done by myself as an impecunious law student making my way through law school on the G.I. Bill,” Briggs says.

Talia Korobin (M'28) was in her third year at Georgetown Medicine when an opportunity to help local DC communities arose. She jumped at the opportunity to compete in the annual DC Public Health Care Challenge, sponsored by the National Academy of Medicine. She was placed on a team with three other students from various parts of the university—Harnoor Sachar (SFS’26), Shivali Vora (SFS’26), and Omar Anwar (C’26)—and their diverse perspectives led to a winning entry.

Their project, Breathe Easy: Improving Air Quality, Respiratory Health and Environmental Justice in Washington, focused on implementing clean air initiatives to both elementary schools and senior homes in Wards 7 and 8. It won the Harrison C. Spencer Interprofessional Prize and is undergoing a 3-year implementation process.

“[Georgetown has] a long and storied history of building interdisciplinary programs. This project fits very well into our mission which encourages conversations across differences," says advisor Leticia Bode, professor of Communications, Culture, and Technology and inaugural research Director at Knight-Georgetown Institute.

As millions of fans tuned in to cheer for their national teams during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Security Studies Program (SSP) alumnus Sina Nemazi (G’24) was focused on a different goal: protecting the international tournament from cyber attacks.

As a cybersecurity manager for FIFA, Nemazi led efforts to safeguard the digital infrastructure behind one of the world’s largest sporting events. His responsibilities ranged from protecting FIFA’s internal systems and corporate networks to cybersecurity coordination and response with host cities.

At the same time, Nemazi interfaced with the FBI, CISA, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and Mexico’s National Cyber Incident Response Center, facilitating cross-border cyber threat intelligence sharing while developing FIFA’s trusted partnerships, coordination mechanisms and operational playbooks that will strengthen cybersecurity cooperation for future international sporting events.

Nemazi credits his success at FIFA to SSP’s technology and security concentration that taught him to look beyond the technical understanding of cybersecurity. The classes provided the framework to view cyber as a transnational security issue that demands strategic thinking, policy expertise and the ability to navigate complex relationships across governments and international organizations.

Founded in 1996 by Bryan Giraudo (C’97) and Seong Kim (B’97), the Georgetown University Student Investment Fund (GUSIF) is much more than a club. Students run an active portfolio with $1.8 million in assets from the Georgetown University endowment and Georgetown University Alumni Association (GUAA), often outperforming Standard & Poor’s index.

The 90-member group is highly regarded, with one recent survey concluding that it is “the best finance course in the business school.” Students from any undergraduate school can apply for membership.

“We’ve set it up like a layer cake to challenge students, and to maintain continuity over time as students graduate,” explains Tom Bianco (B’77, Parent’26), one of the GUSIF advisors. “There are six leadership levels, so students are always learning new responsibilities. They take it very seriously.”

“Employers have taken note,” adds Noelle Verity Koetje (B’91, Parent’26, ’29), another advisor. “These students have a high level of knowledge about the investment process. Their efforts mimic the real-world work of an asset management organization.”
