Nobody tell our boss...
Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea tells the story of the enduring friendship between three towering figures in American art: Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903–1970), and highlight the inspiration they derived from summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann. Through approximately 90 paintings, drawings, and watercolors from the 1920s to the mid-1960s, this exhibition will for the first time reflect in depth on the artistic exchange between these three artists, the experiences they shared, and the support that they provided to each other.
See Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea at the Phillips beginning on October 24.

Guided by collage as both methodology and ethic, Mojdeh Rezaeipour’s archive-based, iterative practice bridges more than a decade of experience as an architect, storyteller, and community organizer. Working across multiple projects simultaneously, her practice is increasingly oriented toward collaboration, engagement, and praxis.
"Classroom Solidarities" chronicles the multi-year analog remaking of approximately 200 digital protest images and videos created by women and young girls in classrooms across Iran, weaving in audio from student-led and feminist movements here in the US and throughout the Global South. The installation includes a series of questions from Rezaeipour's science notebooks from 1990s Tehran, and a selection of responses previously collected by the artist. Over the past month, audiences at the museum have been reflecting on these questions and contributing their own answers by dropping them into the mailbox.
Since the 1990s, as a young immigrant in the US, Joey Mánlapaz was captivated by the architecture and the evolving urban landscape of Washington, DC. Working primarily in oil, she paints transitional streetscapes, hot dog vendors, and newspaper stands—disappearing icons that reflect labor, resilience, and lived experience in the shadow of power. No Mask, No Service pays tribute to the pandemic’s surreal stillness, when the city emptied, restaurants closed, and masks became universal. Amid the desolation, vendors persisted, providing continuity and comfort.

Adam Chamy is a mixed media artist who channels mystic archetypes (such as the truth-teller, the prophet, and the outlaw) to create work that moves between ancestral memory and speculative dreaming. Rooted in his struggles with both insomnia and his identity as a q***r Palestinian Texan, his practice reflects what it means to live within liminal identities and spaces. In A Myth of Resistance Told in Blue, Chamy intertwines personal and collective grief with symbols of resilience. Acrylic, ink, and marker bleed into one another, challenging the permanence of partition and nationalism, and offering moments of rupture and light.
