Home Builders Institute (HBI) is the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of trade skills training & education for our country's construction workforce.

We change lives by educating, inspiring, & preparing individuals for careers in the building industry. HBI is a national leader for career training in the building industry. Through certification programs, mentoring, pre-apprenticeships and job placement services, HBI prepares its students--including at-risk and underserved populations such as youth, veterans, ex-offenders and displaced workers--with the skills and experience they need for successful careers in the building industry. HBI program graduates are qualified to work across many different sectors of the construction industry, giving businesses a competitive edge when hiring new workers. The placement rate for graduates nationwide regularly exceeds 80 percent. HBI training programs do more than just provide job skills; they build character and self-esteem, providing students with the interpersonal skills they need to succeed on the job and in life. This gives graduates a solid foundation for becoming valuable members of their communities and responsible citizens. HBI works in partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in carrying out its various workforce development initiatives. HBI uses a dynamic national skills training model that can be customized to meet local workforce needs in communities nationwide. By facilitating partnerships within these communities, HBI helps them build a solid foundation for economic development and employment growth. HBI helps federal officials and other policymakers understand the importance of creating a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand for qualified workers in the building industry. It also assists state and local workforce boards, state departments of of corrections and education, and state and local home builders associations to further their goals by providing workers with valuable job skills that match local workforce needs.

A four-year degree isn’t the only path to a great career.

Students deserve opportunities to work with their hands, learn practical skills and discover careers they may never have considered.

HBI’s 2027 Schools to Skills Grant helps secondary schools and school districts bring construction trades education into the classroom through our PACT curriculum.

The two-year grant helps schools overcome some of the biggest barriers to starting or expanding a trades program, including curriculum, instructor training and ongoing support.

Applications open October 12 and close December 18.

Rebuilding communities also means building the skilled workforce to support them.

With support from The Home Depot Foundation , HBI is offering a new grant opportunity for community and technical colleges within 100 miles of Los Angeles County.

The funding will help eligible colleges bring HBI’s PACT curriculum to enrolled students, expanding access to hands-on construction education while helping prepare the workforce needed as the Los Angeles region continues rebuilding after the wildfires.

PACT training includes carpentry, electrical and plumbing and combines classroom learning with hands-on instruction.

Eligible programs must have an HBI-approved, PACT-certified instructor with at least five years of construction trade experience and meet HBI program requirements.

What does America’s future need? More people who know how to build it.

HBI President and CEO Ed Brady recently spoke with Sean Hannity about the tremendous opportunity in the skilled trades and the growing need for trained workers across the country.

There are an estimated 300,000 open jobs in the industry today. Behind that number are real career opportunities for young people, transitioning service members and others looking for a meaningful path forward.

These careers can lead to strong incomes, business ownership and the satisfaction of building something that matters.

That’s why HBI is working every day to prepare the next generation of skilled workers.

Today marks the start of Careers in Construction Month.

Throughout October, the construction industry will shine a light on the career opportunities available in the skilled trades and the importance of introducing more people to these pathways.

It comes at an important time. The industry needs skilled workers, and building that workforce starts with education, training and opportunity.

That’s where HBI comes in. We provide hands-on training, industry-recognized credentials and connections to employers, helping people develop skills that can lead to lasting careers while helping the industry build the talent pipeline it needs.

All month long, we’ll celebrate our students, graduates, instructors, programs and industry partners making that work possible.

Follow along throughout October.

Eric got to try a little bit of everything, and that’s kind of the point.

Construction Ready gives students the chance to actually get their hands on the work, learn different skills and figure out where they fit in the trades.

Hear what Eric Gillmore had to say about his experience.

“Now go show up and show out.”

That message was left on a classroom whiteboard at GoodTrades in Jacksonville by one class for the students coming in next. It’s a small gesture that says a lot about what happens here at HBI.

Students gain hands-on skills, but they also join a community that believes in them, encourages them and celebrates what they can do next.

Sometimes the best advice comes from someone who was sitting in your seat just a few weeks ago. 💪
