Tisha B’Av is a day of immense Jewish sorrow, a commemoration of the destruction of our temple.

On Tisha B’Av, we sit on the ground and recite the Megillat Eichah/Book of Lamentations, which portrays the destruction of Jerusalem in 70BCE. We remember that catastrophe, as well as the destruction of the Second Temple, the Crusades, the expulsions, the Shoah. As a multiracial movement of U.S. Jews, this Tisha B’Av we also extend our mourning to those who suffer the actions our government enables.

Today, we cannot read in Eichah about the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian Empire without mourning the destruction of Gaza, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and Lebanon by the U.S and Israeli millitaries. We read about the smashing of homes, starvation under siege, capture, r**e, and death. We cannot mourn our own historic losses without mourning those who suffer and die today because of crimes committed with U.S. weapons in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran.

Mourning today calls us to act tomorrow. And so, together we say loudly and clearly: not another bomb.

Tisha B’Av is a day we recommit to bringing about a world that bombs, bullets, and bulldozers can never make: a world in which our people — and all people — are safe and free.

Last week, 104 representatives voted YES on an amendment to cut $3.3 billion in military funding to Israel.

While the amendment didn’t pass, this vote is a historic shift towards ending U.S. complicity in Israel’s atrocities.

We can’t stop there.

IfNotNow Movement is proudly endorsing Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate in Michigan, the same week that AIPAC and its affiliated PACs have reached nearly $50 million in their spending against him. Abdul is running an unapologetic, people-first campaign that includes ending military aid and blocking U.S. weapons to Israel, abolishing ICE, and banning corporate PAC spending in U.S. elections. These positions are backed by a growing majority of Democratic voters, including Jewish voters.

Abdul El-Sayed would be the first Muslim senator in U.S. history, and he is outspoken about the critical need for shared safety and confronting antisemitism, islamophobia, fascism, and racism together. IfNotNow Movement volunteers will knock on doors in Michigan and make calls to voters.

Abdul is fighting to stop the endless flow of U.S. weapons to Israel and to build a future in which all people can thrive. That vision is terrifying for pro-war lobbies like AIPAC, which is why they’re spending millions to stop him. When Abdul wins, we’ll prove that support for Palestinian human rights not only can win anywhere — but is a requirement of Democratic candidates.

104 U.S. representatives — a historic number — just voted to stop funding the Israeli military.

This vote follows a slew of recent election victories by progressive candidates who support blocking U.S. weapons to Israel to bring an end to Israel’s war crimes in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank.

Establishment Jewish institutions will spend the next week writing angry letters to the representatives who voted “yes” and trying to convince U.S. Jews that these politicians — including eight Jewish representatives — are putting our community in danger.

But our community is no longer falling for the disastrous lie that our safety will come through bombs, bulldozers, walls, or repression.

Poll after poll has shown that U.S. Jews and most voters want to halt the flow of U.S. weapons to Israel. And politicians are finally starting to wake up to this sea change. Yesterday’s historic vote is a powerful step toward shared safety — for Palestinians, Israelis, Lebanese people, Iranians, the U.S. Jewish community, our neighbors, and our democracy.

IfNotNow has been organizing U.S. Jews to demand our government end its support for Israel’s apartheid system since our founding more than a decade ago. Votes like yesterday’s are just the beginning.
