A small blue and white sign can make a big difference.
June 24 is ENS Sign Awareness Day, a reminder to know where to find the Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign at railroad crossings and how to use it in an emergency.
If a vehicle is stuck on the tracks or you see trouble near a crossing:
➡️ Get away from the tracks immediately.
➡️ Find the blue and white ENS sign.
➡️ Call the number listed and provide the crossing ID.
Those few seconds can save lives.

🚂 This is the only train emoji on your keyboard.
The problem? It represents a steam locomotive from a different era.
Today's freight rail network runs on modern locomotives that move the food, fuel, building materials, and products we rely on every day—yet there's no emoji that represents them.
As rail approaches its 200th anniversary in 2027, we think it's time our digital language caught up with reality.

Big Boy is a legend, but the 🚂 emoji is still stuck in the steam era. Today's freight rail network runs on modern locomotives, and we're working to make sure the emoji catches up. ➡️ gorail.quorum.us/campaign/me76cgmy

Rail has evolved. Our emojis haven't. 🚂
For nearly 200 years, rail technology has continued to advance, but the only freight train emoji on most keyboards still represents a steam locomotive from another era.
Today's freight trains move the food, energy, building materials, and consumer goods that keep America running. Yet there's no emoji that reflects the modern locomotives doing that work every day.
As rail approaches its 200th anniversary in 2027, it's time our digital language caught up with reality.

North Carolina's economy depends on efficient freight transportation.
In a recent Carolina Journal op-ed, Julie Kruse-John of the Wake Forest Area Chamber outlines why Congress should preserve policies that allow freight railroads to invest in their networks, strengthen supply chains, and support economic growth throughout the state.

As Congress writes transportation bill, rail must remain NC priority Across NC, 21 freight railroads move everything from construction materials and grain to finished consumer goods. Two of the nation’s largest railroads — CSX and Norfolk Southern — intersect right in our region.
