Would a heavier truck limit end up costing your town money?

That's the question at the center of a proposal in Congress right now — a 10-year "pilot program" that would let trucks weigh up to 91,000 pounds, 14% more than today's limit. We recently sat down with law enforcement, public works, and Capitol Hill experts to unpack what that would actually mean: more than 68,000 local bridges that can't safely handle the extra weight, a higher crash rate, and repair bills that would land on local taxpayers, not the trucking companies.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and reflect on the strength and unity that emerged in the face of tragedy.

A Cheyenne City Council committee just voted unanimously to oppose a federal bill that would let trucks on our highways get even heavier — and GoRail was part of the conversation that got them there.

The bill would raise the weight limit from 80,000 to 91,000 pounds. Sounds like a small change, but as GoRail's Nate Kaplan explained to the committee, heavier trucks cause a lot more damage to roads and bridges, and shippers wouldn't pay a cent more in taxes to cover it. That leaves everyday taxpayers picking up the difference — while big shippers like Amazon get the benefit.

Add in Wyoming's winters and steep grades, and it's easy to see why Cheyenne is speaking up. The full City Council votes next week. Here's how it happened:
