Healthy soil, happy pollinators, lasting impact🌱

Yesterday, we enjoyed hearing from Allison Schindler with UGA Extension, who shared practical ways sustainable agriculture can protect natural resources while keeping farms productive and resilient. From building healthier soil and managing water wisely to integrated pest management, supporting pollinators and using resources more efficiently, Allison showed that sustainability isn’t one single practice—it’s about making smart decisions that work for the farm, the environment and the community.

One of the best takeaways? You don’t need a farm to make a difference. Composting, mulching, planting natives, conserving water and creating pollinator habitat are simple practices we can all put to work at home.

Thank you, Allison, for a great program and for reminding us that small changes at every scale can make a meaningful difference.

Want to put these ideas to work? Allison can help you get started. Reach her at 706.678.2332 or [email protected]

What started with empty collection boxes ended with an incredible show of generosity from our community!

The Washington Rotary Club recently wrapped up our Newborn Essentials Drive in partnership with Piedmont Hospitals, collecting diapers, wipes, formula, newborn clothing, blankets, baby wash and other much-needed items for local families welcoming new little ones.

A special thank you to everyone who donated, our community partners who hosted collection boxes, and the Rotarians who helped make it happen. These donations may seem like simple everyday items, but for a new family, they can make a very real difference.

This week at Rotary, Laura Muir took us back to 2014 and shared the story of a Rotary service trip to Ethiopia—an experience centered on education, opportunity and bringing hope to girls in some of the country’s mountainous and rural communities.

The mission was straightforward but powerful: help girls achieve their dream of an education. The group began in Addis Ababa and traveled northwest, visiting villages, schools and homes along the way. They delivered much-needed supplies including feminine hygiene products, paper and pencils, while also learning more about Rotary International’s broader work in areas such as clean water and polio eradication.

Through Laura’s photos and stories, we got a glimpse of the people, communities and students behind the mission—and a reminder that sometimes relatively simple resources can remove very real barriers to education.

Thank you, Laura, for sharing this journey with us and for reminding us that the reach of Rotary extends far beyond our own community. Whether it’s across the street or across the world, service creates opportunity, connection and hope.

SMALL ESSENTIALS. BIG IMPACT.

A package of diapers may seem like a small donation, but to a family already stretching its budget with a newborn, it removes one immediate expense that can't simply be skipped.

Now through September 19, we’re collecting newborn essentials, in partnership with Piedmont hospitals, for local families who could use a little extra love when bringing baby home.

📍 Drop-off locations: Washington Tavern, Miller's Bistro, Tignall City Hall, and the Washington Woman’s Club (Thursdays, 12–1 PM only).

Every Vote Counts. Every Election Matters.

At today’s Rotary meeting, we welcomed Rachel Cummings, newly appointed Wilkes County Elections Supervisor, for an informative look behind the scenes at what it takes to conduct secure, accurate and trustworthy elections right here in Wilkes County.

With approximately 7,000 active voters in Wilkes County, Rachel shared that maintaining voting integrity is at the heart of the Elections Office’s responsibility—from keeping voter records accurate to ensuring ballots are properly cast, counted and verified.

Georgia continues to be a national leader in election auditing and verification, using post-election audits to independently check the accuracy of election results. Recent statewide reviews have also found Georgia’s voter rolls to be 99.9% accurate.

But elections don’t happen without people—and Rachel was quick to recognize the amazing group of dedicated poll workers who serve our community. These individuals give their time, complete required training and work long hours to make sure elections are conducted correctly, fairly and efficiently—and, most importantly, that every eligible vote counts.

Thank you, Rachel, for joining us and for stepping into this important role in our community. And thank you to the poll workers who make Election Day possible!

One thing every voter can do today: check your registration, verify your information, find your polling location and view your sample ballot here https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/.
