Fall feeding:

Its that time of year, the bees need some extra groceries for the winter. The top boxes of a hive need to be about 70lbs or at least 80% full for the best overwintering chance.

This is my simple open feeder. I simply take the top and frame feeders in inventory and fill them away from the hives.

Normally these feeders go in or on one hive apiece for early spring feeding.

As I am not long on equipment, this allows me to make feed available to all hives at once.
The neighbors bees will thank me too 🤣

Making a bee-line:

These bees where shook out of the mostly empty honey boxes from a previous post. They can fly, however most prefer to just to walk home

Still packing in that pollen 😎

Judging by the time of year and the color this girl is probably just returned from a goldenrod flower.

There is also a patch immediately outside of the hives🥳

Goldenrod flowers in the fall and is one of the last places for bees to forage before winter.

The clean up crew is hard at work.

Last week was the end of the potential to make more honey. These boxes didn’t have enough honey to be extracted.

However, they still had a little honey the bees could use for the winter. To that end, we let the bees clean up the boxes.

The honey boxes can not be left on for winter as it increases the space that the bees will need to heat in the winter. That is particularly dangerous when the honey boxes are not full of honey.

Cool bug alert 🚨

This little guy was hanging out under the eve of the bee hive roof, and he was there after the hive was cared for.

It’s hot out!

When the colony becomes too big for everyone to fit inside, someone has to sleep outside.

This is one way bees regulate the temperature of the hive, by keeping unnecessary body heat out.

One of the best parts of bee keeping:

Bees will do your dishes for you. If you dont want to clean up your sticky mess, just set your extractor outside.

The bees will be more the happy to clean it up and take the honey back to their house.

Empty honey boxes ready for storage.

Overall, harvest went well and yield was good.
