Locke Funeral Services
It is our purpose to fairly, honestly, and compassionately offer our help to individuals planning before their funeral and families at the time of death
It is our purpose to fairly, honestly, and compassionately offer our help. We offer our help not only to families at a time of death, but also to individuals in planning before the funeral. Our help is available after the funeral through a wide range of services and resources. It is also evident in our involvement in the community. We believe we have a responsibility in helping people make the right decisions for themselves by providing information and explaining options which are available. When a decision is reached, our help is available to carry out your instructions. In 1945, C.P. Locke pledged that we would be "Where your wishes govern." That same pledge holds true today, as we offer a four-generation commitment to Integrity, Service, and Excellence. We measure our success by your satisfaction in our help.

When someone you love dies, even the simplest decisions can feel overwhelming.
You don’t need to have every answer or understand everything that comes next. Focus on the first step, then the next. There are people who can help guide you through the process.
Our team is here to answer your questions, explain your options, and help make the next steps a little easier to navigate.

Children and teens don’t always grieve in the ways adults expect. They may cry one moment and laugh, play, or spend time with friends the next.
Those moments of normalcy don’t mean they’ve forgotten or that their grief is any less real. They’re simply part of the way young people process loss.
Giving them space to grieve in their own way, without expectations about what grief should look like, can be an important form of support.
At Locke Funeral Services, we believe every person experiences loss differently, and each deserves compassion, patience, and understanding.

This has been a wonderful exercise for our team. The shift in mindset is noticeable in how we interact as a team and how we interact with the families we serve
This past week, Locke Funeral Services in Waterloo, Iowa, completed the Outward Performance Workshop. We began this journey together in September 2025 and completed the workshop last Tuesday. The workshop was facilitated by Graystone's very own Michael Wellensiek, a Certified Arbinger Facilitator.
Over the past year, the leadership teams at Kearney and Flanner Buchanan have also completed the Outward Performance Workshop.
Kudos to Eric Locke, Ryan Crean, and Jan Smith for their commitment to investing in their people and intentionally focusing on culture within their respective organizations. Building and sustaining a strong culture takes time, commitment, and leadership—and these teams have demonstrated all three.
Congratulations to everyone involved!

We know these terms can feel confusing, especially during an already difficult time. While each option honors a loved one, the experience and timing can look a little different depending on what feels right for your family.
A funeral service is typically more traditional and structured. It usually takes place shortly after a passing and often includes the presence of the loved one, allowing for a formal opportunity to say goodbye.
A memorial service is similar in purpose but takes place after burial or cremation. The loved one is not present, which allows for more flexibility in timing and location while still offering a meaningful, reflective gathering.
A celebration of life is often more personalized and less formal. It focuses on sharing memories, stories, and the impact a loved one had, creating a space that can feel more uplifting and centered on a life well lived.
There is no right or wrong choice—only what feels most meaningful to you and your family. We’re here to walk alongside you and help create a service that truly reflects your loved one.

One of the most challenging aspects of grief is that the world doesn’t stop.
Work continues, schedules fill up, and life moves forward, even when it feels like yours has paused. This can be exhausting and, at times, isolating. You may wonder how to carry your grief while still showing up for daily responsibilities.
The truth is, there is no perfect balance. Some days may feel manageable, while others feel heavy. Giving yourself permission to move at your own pace is important.
You don’t have to “move on.” Instead, think of grief as something you learn to carry, gradually finding ways to integrate it into your life. That may include setting boundaries, asking for support, or creating small moments of rest and reflection within your day.
It’s okay if it takes time. It’s okay if you’re not ready to feel “back to normal.” Healing isn’t about returning to who you were, it’s about learning how to move forward while honoring what you’ve lost.

One of the greatest gifts you can leave your family is clarity.
When a loved one passes, families are often faced with important decisions at a time when emotions are high and energy is low. Questions about service preferences, burial or cremation, and personal wishes can feel overwhelming without guidance.
By making these decisions in advance, you remove that burden. Instead of wondering “What would they have wanted?” your family can move forward without guessing, knowing they are honoring your wishes exactly as you intended.
This act of preparation is deeply meaningful. It allows your loved ones to focus on grieving, remembering, and supporting one another.
At Locke Funeral Services, we consider pre-planning not just a practical step, but a heartfelt act of care. It’s a way to continue looking after your family, even when you’re no longer here to say it yourself.

When someone you care about experiences a loss, it’s natural to want to help—but often difficult to know what to say or do.
The most meaningful support is often simple and sincere. Showing up, listening without trying to fix things, and allowing space for grief can mean more than any words. Grief is not something that can be rushed or resolved—it needs to be felt, and everyone experiences it differently.
Practical gestures can also make a difference. Bringing a meal, helping with everyday tasks, or checking in weeks after the services have ended reminds your loved one that they are not alone as time goes on.
It’s also important to remember that grief doesn’t fade quickly. Support is often most needed after others have returned to their routines.
Above all, compassion matters. You don’t need to have the perfect words—just a willingness to walk alongside someone during a difficult time.
