NY DFS just issued fresh guidance on cyber risk assessments under Part 500. N new obligations, but it names the gaps regulators keep finding in exams. They apply well beyond .

Three that keep coming up:

Incomplete asset visibility. You can't protect data you can't see.

Weak methodology. Risk identified inconsistently, controls never tested, no line between inherent and residual risk.

Static assessments. A once-a-year checkbox instead of something that responds to real change.

The core point: an assessment is only worth doing if it drives your program. If you can't trace a risk to a control, it isn't working.
