When the version of you the world recognises no longer matches the person you’ve become, three things happen:

1️⃣ People keep introducing the old version of you
2️⃣ Opportunities keep finding the old version of you
3️⃣ Expectations stay attached to the old version of you

Meanwhile, you’re already living as someone else and it takes people a VERY long time to get used to that and also accept it.

Nothing is neutral not even retirement.

Dustin Poirier said he’s trying to separate himself from the Fighter now that he’s left the UFC.

And I get it. I really do.

But here’s what happens when you don’t give that identity somewhere to go.

1. You replace him with things that have no meaning. He’s going to try to fill the gap which will end up being a sinkhole.

2. You become resentful. Then angry.
We’ve already seen Dustin lose control, and when the thing that made you feel most alive has been labelled retired, grief will follow.

3. The Fighter takes over in areas of your life where he has no business being.
The fighter version of him will always take the dominant role, especially if there is no container to control it. It’s a huge part of his identity that will leak into his relationships, parenting, and the way you respond when someone pushes back. The fighter will show up. Just not where you want him.

This is the most dangerous thing you can do to an identity that powerful.

The Fighter is his asset and now it needs a role. If I were working on Dustin’s public identity, I’d assign the Fighter to an anchor role. This is the role that keeps him grounded, keeps him disciplined, controls his body, and gives him purpose. He’s behind the scenes but controls almost all areas of his life. The difference is, the fighter is no longer taking centre stage like it used to.

This is the work I do. I find the version of you that already exists and I give it somewhere to go.
