Land Designs By Colton
We are a Design and Build Landscape Company in the Denver Metro Area.
Land Designs By Colton was founded in March of 2011 by Jonathan Colton, after he graduated with a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture and urban design from Mississippi State University in 2010. Land Designs by Colton is a design/build Denver landscaping company, who is owner operated. After all of these years of experience in design and construction, we believe that through design and efficient use of materials and water we can help to change the space of your home and help to contribute to a healthy environment.
Xeriscape front yard in the Park Hill neighborhood.
We reduced the lawn by two-thirds and installed shade trees in the median, a must in all of our designs. A variety of natural materials creates a good design. Xeriscape does not mean dyed mulch and rocks.
The landscape features drought tolerant plants, along with shade loving varieties closer to the house. Every area was thoughtfully designed for the client to enjoy their new front yard. The backyard also received a complete makeover.
We can’t wait to see this project in full bloom.

There are a lot of landscaping companies in Colorado.
We're not trying to be the biggest.
We're proud to be a small, family-oriented company.
For us, that means caring about the details.
It means sitting down with our clients and actually listening to what they want.
It means spending time thinking about the design before we ever put a shovel in the ground.
It means choosing materials carefully, selecting plants intentionally, and being involved in the installation from beginning to end.
And yes, sometimes it means our work comes home with us at the end of the day. 😉
Land Designs by Colton was built around the idea that a landscape should feel personal.
Not like a template.
Not like the house down the street.
But like your home.
We're grateful for every family who has trusted us with their outdoor spaces over the past five years.
These projects aren't just pictures in our portfolio.
They're part of our story.
And we're excited to start sharing more of that story with you.

Xeriscape doesn't mean a yard full of rocks.
In fact, some of our favorite xeriscape landscapes are full of texture, movement, color, and life.
Good xeriscape design is about being intentional with water, choosing plants that are appropriate for our Colorado climate and placing them where they can thrive.
It can include ornamental grasses moving in the wind, flowering perennials, evergreen structure, beautiful boulders, trees for shade, and carefully selected hardscape materials.
The goal isn't to REMOVE everything green.
The goal is to CREATE a landscape that is beautiful and makes sense for where we live.
These projects are a great example of how a low-water landscape can still feel lush, intentional, and connected to the architecture of the home.
Colorado landscape design is about working with our environment, not fighting it.

Myth #1 about Xeriscape: “It looks like a parking lot.”
Take a look at this 👇
This is a xeriscape project, that we design and install. It looks lush, layered, and full of life. Not a sea of rock.
✔️ A diverse mix of perennials, shrubs, and ornamental grasses
✔️ Thoughtful combination of different rock sizes for texture and function
✔️ Mid-sized trees adding structure and shade
✔️ A small front lawn to maintain that classic curb appeal
Xeriscaping isn’t about removing beauty; it’s about designing with knowledge. You can have color, movement, and seasonal interest while still conserving water.
What do you think? Does this change your idea of xeriscape? 🌿
After a well‑deserved break, we’re back and fully recharged for 2026.
Our recent trip through Argentina and Chile was full of landscape, history, and inspiration. In Mendoza, Parque General San Martín, designed by French landscape architect Carlos Thays, stands as a powerful example of how landscape architecture transformed desert into a green urban system. The park and city rely on ancient acequias, still carefully maintained by city employees, giving Mendoza its clean streets, shaded avenues, and mature tree canopy.
The climate feels much like Colorado, dry and sunny, though winters are warmer. Flying into the Andes and seeing Aconcagua from above was breathtaking and unforgettable.
In Chile, we visited the coast, where massive hydrangeas thrive in the cooler climate, and spent time in Santiago de Chile, surrounded by colonial architecture dating back to the 1560s. So much history and beautiful landscape, an inspiring way to begin the year.
79° in Denver, the perfect fall day for planting!
Warm soil and cool air make ideal conditions for getting bulbs in the ground before winter. Today we planted Gabriella tulips and Grand Allium bulbs, using a drill with an auger bit, which makes digging quick, consistent holes and saves so much time (and your low back too).
Here’s why fall planting works best:
✔️The soil is still warm enough for roots to establish.
✔️Cooler air reduces stress on the bulbs.
✔️You’ll get stronger growth and earlier blooms in spring.
✔️Pro Tip: Space your bulbs about 4–6 inches apart and plant them two to three times as deep as their height.
Let’s see in the spring how these come up! 🌿✨🌷
