A moodboard is a study in what the home should feel like, not just how it should look.
Colors, textures, materials, and moments help set the direction for each space before the details come together.
Every project starts with a feeling. This is where we begin.

Over the last five years, Sonderlust’s growth has happened quietly and organically.
Nearly every project has come through relationships.
No large marketing campaigns. No aggressive advertising. Just referrals.
In design, trust travels quickly.
When the experience of working together is a positive one, relationships with clients, builders, and collaborators tend to extend far beyond a single project and evolve into lasting partnerships.
Over time, those partnerships begin to form a network.
And that network becomes the foundation of a studio.
We don’t take any of it for granted. We’re incredibly grateful for every person who has trusted us, shared our name, and opened a door to what came next. Thank you. ✨
Materiality is where a space begins to move beyond what can be seen.
It’s in the weight of a stone, the softness of a textile, the grain of the wood, and the way a finish responds as the light changes throughout the day.
Each material brings something beyond color or pattern.
It brings texture, temperature, depth, movement, and its own relationship to everything around it.
That’s why selecting materials is never simply about finding something beautiful.
A sample can photograph perfectly and still feel completely wrong once it enters the room.
The scale may shift.
The texture may compete.
The finish may catch the light differently than expected.
So much of the process happens through interaction: touching, layering, comparing, moving things around, and seeing how one material changes the perception of another.
A space isn’t experienced as a collection of individual selections. It’s experienced as a whole.
And when the materiality is right, you may not be able to name exactly why the room feels the way it does. You just know that it does.

Great design requires imagination.
But it also requires precision.
At Sonderlust, much of the work happens long before construction begins. Projects are developed using ArchiCAD, a robust design platform that allows the studio to create fully integrated 3D construction models.
These models allow every element of the project to be visualized before the first wall is built.
Lighting. Cabinetry. Material transitions.
Clients, builders, and collaborators can walk through the project virtually, aligning decisions before construction begins.
The result is a design process that is both creative and deeply methodical.
Because beautiful spaces rarely happen by accident.

A name can reveal more about a studio than a mission statement.
Sonderlust came from a desire to really understand people. The experiences that shape them, the places that influence them, the things they’re drawn to, and the ways they want to live. To recognize that while each of us experiences the world in our own way, our lives are deeply connected to one another.
That curiosity has always been at the heart of our work.
Design gives us an invitation into someone else’s world. To listen, observe, ask questions, explore possibilities, and ultimately create something that feels true to the people and place it belongs to.
Because the most meaningful spaces aren’t simply beautiful. They hold identity, memory, ritual, and experience.
They make people feel seen.
That is what Sonderlust has meant to us from the beginning. And it continues to shape the way we see people, spaces, and the work we create.
The last couple of weeks at Wild Horse have been big ones.
Years of imagining, designing, planning, and problem-solving brought us here.
The spaces we’ve known through countless drawings, plans, and samples began to become real.
The final upholstery and soft goods found their homes. Decorative lighting brought the rooms to life. What has lived in our heads for years started to feel whole.
There is still work to do, but this was a milestone.
Room by room, piece by piece, Wild Horse is coming to life.
And in celebration, we’re kicking our feet up for the weekend.

Interior design is often mistaken for decoration.
And architecture is often mistaken for interior design.
But the difference between all three is significant.
Decoration focuses on the visual layer of a space: furniture, styling, and finishing details.
Interior design begins much earlier. It considers how a space functions and feels, informing circulation, lighting, cabinetry, materiality, and the details that shape the experience of a space.
Architecture establishes the structure, form, systems, and framework that make the space possible.
But none of these disciplines exist in isolation.
At Sonderlust, we believe architecture and interiors are inseparable. Each informs the other, and the strongest spaces are designed with both in mind from the beginning.
Because good design isn’t layered on at the end. It’s considered from the start and carried all the way through ex*****on.

Some colors ask to be noticed.
Yellow is one of them.
We find it in the places that feel especially alive. A sculptural light. Changing foliage. The machinery, tools, and everyday infrastructure we pass without much thought until a certain color makes us look twice.
Maybe that's why we keep photographing it.
Our color studies are less about searching for inspiration and more about noticing what's already there. The shades, combinations, and details that catch our attention long before there's a project or palette to assign them to.
This time, we're collecting yellow. 💛

Some years ask you to wait.
This one asks you to move.
Today marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse - a year of momentum, courage, creative risk, and ideas taking shape faster than expected. The kind of energy that builds things.
To mark it, we’re starting a new Sonderlust ritual.
From now on, a unicorn may quietly appear somewhere at one of our job sites. Not styled. Not announced. Just placed.
If you spot it in our stories or posts, DM us where you found it. You’ll be entered to win something special from the stables.
We’re calling it Unicorn Sightings.
Because building magic shouldn’t only happen behind the scenes. ✨
