Root the Power is a Program of Wichita non-profit Destination Innovation Inc. We are a group of young people trying to motivate others to take a part in registering to vote, hitting the poles, be an active member in the upcoming election, and take part in beginning a conversation with the public and people in office. There are a great number of ways to make changes and improvements! We choose to use our voices and connect with the people around us to strive for a great future!

We’re excited to see our very own Root the Power intern, Saniya Thompson, joining local leaders for a conversation centered on civic engagement, community, and the power of young people using their voices.
She’ll be joined on the panel by Marquetta Atkins-Woods, our Executive Director of Destination Innovation, along with leaders from across Wichita who are helping shape our community.
At Root the Power, we believe young people shouldn’t have to wait until they’re older to have a seat at the table. Opportunities like this give students the chance to ask questions, share their perspectives, connect with community leaders, and see firsthand that their voices matter right now.

Being prepared for an emergency starts with knowing what to do, what to have on hand, and making a plan before you need one.
Join Black Environmental Leaders, Root the Power, and The Center for a FREE Community Disaster Preparedness Lunch & Learn featuring a presentation from the American Red Cross.
Attendees will receive practical emergency-preparedness information and resources while connecting with organizations serving our community.

What an amazing feeling it is to watch our seniors celebrate their last first day of school of high school and collage. 🎓
To think that we had the opportunity to meet and support so many of them as freshmen, and now we get to watch them step confidently into their senior year.
Congratulations to our Root The Power interns on reaching this incredible milestone! We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see everything this year brings. 🌟

Today, young people came together to learn more about clean energy technology, civic engagement, and the power of using their voices to support the issues that matter to them.

Today, Root the Power showed up at the Wichita City Council meeting to support Naomi as she spoke about the water crisis that affected the area where she grew up.
She shared her concerns, spoke from her own experience and asked City leaders to take action. We’re incredibly proud of her for using her voice to stand up for a community that means so much to her.
A special thank-you to Shepard for District 1 for connecting with Naomi to help make sure her request is followed through.
The meeting also included a proclamation recognizing HBCU Appreciation Day. Since Naomi attends Morgan State University, she was invited to join the proclamation photo, making the day even more special!

Root the Power was proud to be present at Freedompalooza—a community-centered event bringing Kansans together for conversation, connection, and civic engagement. 🗳️✨
Our Program Manager, Jondalyn Marshall, moderated the Meet the Candidates conversation, creating space for candidates across party lines to discuss the issues affecting Kansans and the communities they hope to represent.
The event also featured special guest Dr. Micah Kubic, Executive Director of the ACLU of Kansas, along with music, activities, community building, and food from Adios Nachoria at the WAVE.
Thank you to the Freedompalooza organizers, participating candidates, speakers, vendors, and community members who made the event possible. Root the Power was grateful to be in the room as Kansans came together to listen, learn, and build community power.

This Friday is an opportunity to hear directly from candidates running for federal and state offices, learn more about the issues impacting Kansans, and connect with others who are passionate about building community power.
