The girl with the blue guitar. The uptown storyteller. The tran in black.

A good option if you're gonna have both Gen-X rockers and Millennial nerds at your show.

Kansas broke my heart so badly that it's easy to forget the things I loved about it. One of those things is the Flint Hills. I wrote this song at a scenic vista near Cottonwood Falls, just being present in the moment and in that place, and pondering what it once was, and what it may someday become. This is called "A Flint Hills Story," and you can hear the whole song here: https://youtu.be/BMDOI6mb0fE

The year was 2017. I'd been fighting against the ever-growing parts of my soul that felt womanly my entire life. They hurt, because I'd been making excuse after excuse to explain them away, but they never went away.

One evening, I went to see Green Day in Tulsa, OK. Opening for them was a band I'd heard the name of here and there. That was Against Me!, and what I'd somehow not heard about them up to that point was that Laura Jane Grace was a trans woman. Seeing her in her element shattered a litany of misconceptions about transgenderness that were keeping me caged in a man's life - that trans women couldn't be beautiful with progressing age, that they couldn't enjoy success doing what they loved, and especially that they weren't allowed to be noisy. By the time my then-spouse and I completed the long, tired drive home, every excuse and denial had burned away, and I knew what I was. And I knew that, all other things being equal, it was okay. Only the uneasy stability of the life I'd built as a man kept me scared away from saying it out loud. Three years later, even that stopped being enough.

I have been JLNN on stage and Jaelynn off of it for six years now. I've been deep in my memories of this chronology this morning, and it's driving me with more urgency than ever to get this album done. And if I'm very lucky, I'm going to use it to teach some scared, closeted girl out there, somewhere, that it's okay to be who she knows she is. Just like Laura did for me.

Happy pride, friends. I'll sing to you soon. πŸ’™πŸŽΈπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

So I had a song for my album that ended up being a little too close to an existing pop song in its phrasing (that I wasn't aware existed), and so I decided to scrap it. This has put album production on hold until my muse saw fit to visit me with a substitute that was as good or better.

Well, she visited today, and I'm really excited about this one. It probably won't be the standout track on the album, but I guess that's not really for me to decide. Still, I'm...kind of in love with it. P!nk fans will like this one, I think.

We're back in business, girls! Sing to you soon! πŸ’™πŸŽΈ

The remastered editions of Aries & Embers and the Into The Storm EP are now LIVE on your favorite music service! They actually dropped yesterday, but there was a death in my family and I needed the day to myself.

Just search "JLNN" and you'll find them, sounding better than ever.

Also, be on the lookout for my new album, Welcome To Womanhood, which I'm aiming to have out next month.

As always, take good care and be well, my dear friends. I'll sing to you soon.
