Botanica, The Wichita Gardens is open year-round and repeat visits offer new surprises as The Gardens change with the seasons. In spring, more than 50,000 tulip bulbs and 120,000 daffodil bulbs bloom along with an assortment of wildflowers and flowering shrubs. More than 20,000 annuals combine with beautiful perennial color in the summer along with spectacular prairie wildflowers. In autumn, you’ll find asters, liriope, sedum, and more than 5,500 chrysanthemums amongst the backdrop of fall color from trees and shrubs. In winter, The Gardens feature 12,000 pansies, red-twig dogwood, witch hazel, and berried hollies. As the gardens have grown, so have the educational opportunities. The diversity of the garden display areas provides a rich horticultural and visual learning environment for all visitors. This diversity allows for a consistent growth in the number and variety of youth and continuing education opportunities offered to the community. Botanica also takes pride in developing the community. In keeping with its mission to promote community development and provide cultural experiences in a pleasant garden setting, Botanica has a wide-array of special events throughout the year. Special events are designed to bring visitors to the Gardens for a variety of activities that involve the community in garden-centered events, that provide entertainment for members, and that encourage attendance. Attendance at these special events accounts for approximately one-fourth of the annual attendance at Botanica. Plans for continued cultivation include additional educational programming, enhanced special events, and plans for expansion of The Gardens, including consolidated administrative offices and new facilities with the opening of a new events center that opened in 2014, as well as the Chinese Garden of Friendship opened in Spring 2015. With ever-changing scenery, educational classes for young and old, and special events to entertain and amuse, we invite you to visit Botanica often and take advantage of all that the Gardens have to offer!

🌿 Gardening Smarter During the Drought 💧
With severe drought conditions putting extra stress on gardens and landscapes, Botanica is using water-wise practices to protect our plants while conserving water.
Here are a few ways you can help your garden at home:
💧 Water deeply and less frequently to encourage stronger roots
🌅 Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation
🌱 Use drip irrigation to deliver water directly to the soil
🍂 Add 2–3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and keep soil cooler
🚫 Avoid fertilizing or planting until temperatures cool
🌳 Prioritize established trees and shrubs over annual flowers
Some plants and lawns may go dormant during extreme heat—and that’s okay. Take note of what struggled this summer, and consider adding more drought-tolerant varieties to your garden next year.

Looking for a fun way to give back, meet new people and spend more time at Botanica, The Wichita Gardens? Our Volunteer Fair is your chance to explore the many ways you can get involved!
We’ll have representatives from departments across Botanica on hand to share information and answer questions about volunteer opportunities, including:
🌿 Horticulture — Help with planting, weeding, mulching and garden maintenance
🌻 Adult Education — Become a Garden Ambassador and share your plant knowledge through garden tours and information booths
🦋 Youth Education — Assist with field trips and youth events
🎉 Special Events — Help with evening and weekend events through greeting guests, wayfinding, concessions and more
🎠 Carousel — Assist with token sales and carousel needs during special events
🤝 Volunteer Groups — Bring your corporate or community group to Botanica for larger volunteer projects
🌺 Guest Services — Help welcome guests throughout the gardens, including admissions and the Gift Shop
🚂 Train Garden — Operate the G-scale model trains in the Gene Spear Train Garden
Botanica Pistils will also be joining us! This community of Botanica supporters champions volunteering and plant-based learning and will be available to share information and help facilitate memberships.
Snacks will be provided, and we’ll have a raffle for new volunteers who sign up at the fair. Existing volunteers can also enter by bringing a friend who signs up to become a new volunteer!
