If your baby always looks one direction, this is worth watching. 👶

Torticollis doesn't always show up as a dramatic head tilt. A lot of the time it's more subtle, and you may not pick up on it until a flat spot starts to develop or your pediatrician flags it at a well check. The good news is, when it's caught early and the right interventions start, progress usually follows.

Another thing worth clarifying is that PT and helmets do different jobs. PT targets the neck, working on the tight muscle causing the tilt so your baby can turn, tolerate tummy time, and move symmetrically. A helmet doesn't touch the muscle at all, it works on the outside, guiding the skull into a more even shape as it grows. Most babies who need a helmet still need PT alongside it, since a helmet can reshape the head but it can't loosen a tight neck. And if your baby does end up needing one, that's not a failure on your part. Some cases are more significant and need support beyond stretches alone.

It's also worth knowing that plagiocephaly, a flat spot on the head, doesn't harm the brain itself. The brain grows and develops normally underneath, regardless of the skull's outer shape. The concern with plagiocephaly is more about symmetry and appearance long term, not brain development. Neck range of motion is the piece that actually matters most medically, since a tight neck can affect movement, feeding, and comfort well beyond the flat spot itself.

I go deeper on all of this, including visual examples of what flat spots can look like, what we look for at well checks, and the real pros and cons of helmet therapy, in my YouTube video, "Flat Head Syndrome in Babies: Plagiocephaly, Prevention, and Helmet Therapy."

Feeding consults with Mary Hunter and Little Roo usually include exercises and Craniosacral techniques the parent can do to help prevent plagiocephaly as well as torticollis

I wish all ENT’s, Pediatrician’s and IBCLC’s were trained in proper infant feeding mechanics and oral function… a release isn’t always necessary but understanding why a baby is coughing, clicking, struggling with flow and or mom is having pain is almost always due to restrictions and tension in the mouth

I live the evenflo wide neck bottle for babies to help widen latch and palate as well as improve oral function and tone- it meets the triangle test also but some moms do run into issues w this part and Julie has a great video to explain why!
