Surrender is not the absence of wanting. It is what you do with the wanting.

People hear surrendered and picture somebody with no desires left, no opinions, no pull in another direction. That is not a Christian. That is a co**se.

Jesus wanted the cup to pass. He said so out loud. He was not pretending he was fine with it. He asked honestly, and then said not my will but yours be done. Luke 22:42. The want was real. The laying it down was also real.

That is the whole thing. Not one dramatic moment where you stop having a will. A thousand ordinary moments where you have one and you put it on the altar again.

Which is why it is never finished. You will lay something down this year that you already laid down two years ago. That is not failure. That is what an altar is for.

What is the thing you keep taking back?

God is not short staffed.

Whatever He gave you to do, He could do without you. He could raise up somebody else this afternoon. He does not need your voice, your money, your platform, or your talent. That should land as humbling before it lands as anything else.

Then sit with the other half of it. He asked you anyway.

That is not God being desperate. That is mercy. He let you have a part in something that was going to happen with or without you. He built the work first and then invited you into it. We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand. Ephesians 2:10. Prepared beforehand. The work was already there.

This is why gifted people burn out. They start carrying it like the whole thing depends on them. Then they start needing it. Then the calling quietly becomes about them.

You are not the point. Getting to participate is the gift.

Grace gets used two wrong ways and both of them leave you stuck.

Some people treat it like a permission slip. God will forgive me, so it does not really matter. Paul saw that coming and answered it hard. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means. Romans 6:1 and 2.

Others swing the other way and treat holiness like something to white knuckle on their own. They burn out or start faking it, because nobody can do that.

Grace is neither the excuse nor the pressure. It is the power. The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions. Titus 2:11 and 12. Training us. Grace is what actually teaches a man to walk clean, and it is the only thing that ever has.

You are not holy because you are strong. You are not stuck because you are weak. You are changed because He gives you what you do not have.

Not every hard season is God being angry with you.

That is where a lot of believers land by default. Something breaks and the first thought is what did I do. Sometimes that is the right question. Often it is not.

Fire does two different things depending on what it touches. It destroys what was never going to last, and it purifies what is real. Same fire, different result, and the difference is in the material.

Peter said the tested genuineness of your faith is more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire. 1 Peter 1:7. Tested, not destroyed. He is not burning you down. He is burning off what could not have come with you anyway.

Some of what you lost this year was never going to survive where He is taking you. It felt like loss. It was weight coming off.

That does not make it hurt less. It does change what it means.

It is possible to know the Bible well and not know God at all.

That sounds like an exaggeration until you remember who Jesus said it to. He said it to the people who knew the text best. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. John 5:39 and 40.

They had the words memorized and missed the person standing in front of them.

Study is not the enemy here. Most believers need more of it, not less. The danger is when the studying becomes the relationship. When you can explain the doctrine of grace and have not talked to Him honestly in a month.

Information about someone is not intimacy with them. You can know a man's entire biography and never have had one real conversation with him.

When was the last time you came to Him instead of just reading about Him?

A lot of us have prayed for things we were not built to survive yet.

The platform, the marriage, the money, the position. If He had handed it over in the season you first asked, it would have broken something in you. Not because the thing is bad. Because you were not able to hold it and stay yourself.

Nobody wants to hear that in the middle of the waiting. In the waiting it just feels like being forgotten.

But look at the pattern. Joseph in a prison before a palace. David anointed years before he ever sat on a throne. Moses on the back side of a desert for forty years. God is never in a hurry to hand a man something that will ruin him.

The delay is not empty. It is the part where He makes you able.

They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength. Isaiah 40:31. Renew. Something is actually happening to you in there.

There is a difference between conviction and condemnation, and mixing them up will cost you years.

Condemnation tells you that you are the problem and there is no way back. It is vague, it is heavy, and it never gives you a next step. It drives you away from God.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hurts, but it comes with a door. It moves you toward Him instead of away.

If God is showing you something ugly right now, that is not Him turning on you. That is Him refusing to let something keep growing in the dark where you cannot fight it. The Lord disciplines the one he loves. Hebrews 12:6. Discipline is not the opposite of love. It is evidence of it.

Nobody enjoys the knife. You would still rather have the surgeon than the tumor.

We assume silence means no. Usually it means not like that.

You asked Him to take it away. He did not. So you started wondering if you did something wrong, or if He is even listening, or if this works for other people and not for you.

But look at what happens in the waiting. You find out what you actually believe when the relief does not come. You find out how much of your faith was attached to outcomes. You get honest in a way comfort would never have made you.

Paul asked three times for the thorn to be removed. Three times. The answer was my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9. That is not God ignoring him. That is God refusing to trade the deeper thing for the easier thing.

If He is not moving the situation, He may be doing something in you that the situation is required for.

That is harder to accept. It is also better than being comfortable and unchanged.
