Getting sober doesn't automatically make depression, anxiety, or trauma disappear.
For people living with both addiction and a mental health condition, untreated symptoms can make early recovery especially difficult. They can intensify cravings, interfere with therapy, and increase the risk of returning to substance use.
Chelsea Lomastro, Clinical Director at our sister center in Rhode Island, discusses these challenges and the importance of treating the whole person, not just their substance use.
During , we're sharing her perspective on a connection families shouldn't overlook.

“Can I detox on my own?”
It’s a common question, but depending on the substance, withdrawal can come with serious medical risks.
Lilly Cabral, Clinical Director of 3.5 and 3.7 Services at AdCare, explains why medically supervised detox can provide more than symptom management; it also gives patients monitoring, structure, and support as they begin recovery.
If you’re thinking about stopping substance use, you don’t have to figure out the safest next step alone. Reach out 1-800-ALCOHOL.

Please join us in celebrating our October Employee of the Month, Sarah Mwaniki! 🎉💜
Sarah is known for welcoming and training new staff with a smile, and for the patience and kindness she shows both her coworkers and the patients we serve.
Her teammates say she is truly admired -- and it’s easy to see why. Congratulations, Sarah, and thank you for everything you bring to AdCare each day! 👏
Sometimes the question isn’t “Why won’t you stop?” It’s “What happened that made this feel like the answer?”
For Jamison, one of the alumni from our Las Vegas sister center, drugs weren’t where the problem started. They became a way to cope with pain that was already there.
Recovery gave him the chance to look underneath the substance use, understand what he was trying to cope with, and start finding a different way through.
What if recovery isn’t about giving something up?
For Marci Hopkins, alcohol once felt like the one thing she couldn’t imagine living without. But recovery shifted the way she saw it: she wasn’t losing alcohol. She was getting her life back.
And when so much of your life has been built on a crumbling foundation, recovery means getting to rebuild on something steadier. ❤️

Substance use is often the part we can see. Underneath it may be pain, trauma, stress, disconnection, or something else a person has been trying to cope with.
During Substance Use Prevention Month, it’s worth remembering that prevention isn’t only about substances. It’s also about connection, support, coping skills, and addressing what’s happening beneath the surface.
Because sometimes, the most important question isn’t “Why the drugs?” It’s “What happened before them?”

We closed out Recovery Month on a sweet note. 💜
Yesterday, AdCare staff and patients gathered for purple desserts — cannolis, cupcakes, cookies, and black raspberry ice cream (OH MY!) — and it turned into our biggest patient turnout for an event yet!
It felt like a fitting way to end the month: together, celebrating recovery and the milestones that come with it.
To everyone marking a soberversary this month, whether it’s your first or one of many, we’re celebrating with you.
Recovery is daily, and it’s not always easy.
Recovery Month gives us an opportunity to talk openly about what recovery really looks like: caring for behavioral health as part of overall health, making evidence-based treatment and support accessible, challenging the stigma that can keep people from reaching out, and honoring the millions of people doing the work of recovery every day.
September may be ending, but recovery doesn’t follow a calendar. Neither does support. 1-800-ALCOHOL

Sometimes, what’s hard to say out loud finds another way out.
On September 23 and 24, AdCare patients took part in an art and poetry show, creating original paintings, decorated masks, and poetry using materials provided by the hospital.
The finished pieces were displayed for patients and staff to see, turning our conference room into a small gallery full of creativity, personality, and self-expression.
Because recovery isn’t only about what you’re leaving behind. It can also be about discovering new ways to express yourself, connect, and create something that feels like your own. 🎨
See more from the patient art and poetry show in our Art & Expression at AdCare album. ❤️
