Protecting the Right to Read in MA!
An Act Regarding Free Expression heads to Governor Healey’s desk.
Late last week, the Massachusetts House and Senate officially sent An Act Regarding Free Expression (S.2696) to Governor Healey’s desk!
Nationwide, we are witnessing an unprecedented wave of censorship targeting books that celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals, trans history, and diverse experiences. This critical bill sets statewide standards to protect our public and school libraries from politically motivated book bans, safeguarding open access to knowledge and protecting our dedicated librarians from harassment.
Representation saves lives. When LGBTQ+ youth can read stories that reflect their lives and experiences, they know they belong.
A massive THANK YOU to our legislative allies , , , , , , ,
Additional thanks to our advocacy partners &
Now, we look forward to Governor Healey signing this vital legislation into law!

On the final day of Pride Month, the U.S. Supreme Court issued another devastating decision affecting transgender youth. This marks the second consecutive Pride Month in which the Court has handed down a ruling that weakens protections for transgender young people.
While today's decision is heartbreaking, our commitment remains unchanged. MassEquality will continue advocating for policies that ensure every LGBTQ+ person can live, learn, and thrive with dignity and belonging.

Today An Act Regarding Free Expression passed in the House, which ensures that students have the right to access reading materials with literary, educational and artistic merit as determined by teachers and librarians, not people who have political agendas without ties to their local school communities.
We are grateful to our legislative partners and our advocacy partners The Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action, ACLU Massachusetts, Greater Boston PFLAG, and all of the librarians, teachers, students who were united in this fight.
